    Windows asks default program even after being set: disable this?

    So, when I set a default program in the Settings app and then open a file, Windows still asks which program I want to use. Admittedly, it does this only once per file type, but this is extremely annoying in a work environment where there are numerous computers.

    For example, I went into the Settings app and set the .AU3 file extension to be opened in a specific program. Then, I double-clicked an .AU3 file, and I got this window:

    Windows asks default program even after being set: disable this? [IMG]

    It has the correct default in the above image, but it asks if I want to "keep using this app." Why? Can I make this stop? It's annoying.

    :)

    Windows 10 asks default program even after it being set

    This issue could be a result of missing or corrupted data files. We suggest that you use the
    SFC (System File Checker) tool. This tool will help you identify and repair issues like this. Follow these steps to run the
    SFC:

    • Type cmd in the Search box from your desktop.
    • On the left pane, right-click cmd and select 'Run as Administrator'.
    • Type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

    If the first resolution didn't help, you can try these steps to run the
    System update readiness
    command:

    • Type cmd in the Search box from your desktop.
    • On the left pane, right-click cmd and select 'Run as Administrator'.
    • In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press
      Enter after each command:

    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
    • DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth.

    To close the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type
    Exit
    and press Enter. You can also refer to this
    article
    created by ZigZag3143 (MS -MVP) for more information about the
    SFC tool.

    Let us know how it goes and we'll give you further assistance if needed

  3. Windows 10 asks default program even after it being set

    Hi,

    I'd appreciate help.

    As I detailed in this screen-recording (windows pop-up default app.mp4), even I set Windows 10 default app for open video, music and image, it keeps asking "how do you want to open this file?" (pop-up window) always I run any video, music or image file.

    If I run the files from Windows Explorer, there is no problem. The file will run directly without the annoying pop-up window.

    However, the pop-up windows always appears when I run the file through a link from any application (e.g. MS Word).

    Does anyone know how to open default program always, in any situation, without pop-up "how do you want to open this file"?

    P.s. I already deleted [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Roaming\OpenWith] from the registry, as suggested in this thread:

    Windows asks default program even after being set: disable this? - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums

    I also tried all workarounds suggested here:

    How to Fix: Windows 10 Keeps Asking: 'How do you want to open this file?'

    No success at all.

    Thanks for assistance,

  5. Having a similar issue. Except for internet explorer being the default browser. I have it set as the default browser, but when clicking links from outlook, I get that message.

  6. Check the "Always use this app" box at the bottom and you shouldn't see it again.

  7. Sorry, that's the problem. I still see the message if I check the box. If I set it to chrome or edge, it actually remembers my choice.

    Have you changed the defaults in the CP?

  9. Yes, and this is repeatable at least for me on 2 different windows 10 boxes.

  10. Might want to browse the Microsoft/IE forum and see if it's a listed issue with a possible solution.

    I know that I can click the checkbox at the bottom.

    The problem is that I need this dialog box not to appear to begin with. When we deploy computers to users, we don't want them having to deal with this dialog box at all.

    Windows asks default program even after being set: disable this?

    Update: apparently, the above tutorial does not fix the issue.

    We are back at square one.

  14. I installed a registry tracker to see what was changed when I told Windows to use the program that I had previously told it to use, and it pointed me to this registry key:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Roaming\OpenWith]

    There are "FileExts" and "UrlAssociations" subtrees. In the FileExts tree, there's an entry for every extension where there is more than one app. There's a UserChoice key under that.

    For extensions where you've told it the app, it looks like this:
    "Hash"="9y6MzyOZgPs="
    "ProgId"="VLC.3ga"

    For extensions where Windows will ask you, it looks like this:
    "Hash"="AuVy+LqM+XE="
    "ProgId"="AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc"

    Then I noticed that there were extensions that were registered that did not appear on that OpenWith list, which made my next step obvious:

    I backed it up, then deleted the whole [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Roaming\OpenWith] tree.

    Works great. Everything opens with the app that's registered, without double-checking if that's what I really want.

    It's worked so far for me. Please let me know if this works or doesn't work for you.

    I also deleted the "UrlAssociations" key, just because.

    Didn't work for me. I'm still asked how to open a PDF every time, with stock MS viewer already selected, no tickbox to always use that app...
