    Windows backup image recognition

    Hi all,

So i, along with many other people are having problems wirh the built in backup ability in Windows 10 (error 0x80070013).

Using Windows backup was great for creating an image incase i needed to reboot into recovery and restore everything using the image file the backup created.

Now that i'm getting the error and its not working properly. I wondered if theres any other product out there that backs up to an image that could be used to restore in exactly the same way i could restore using the recovery method im used to.

That is, when i wanted to restore using the image that windows 10 created via the built in backup method, i hit 'reboot' while holding the shift key down. Then went through the options to launch the restore wizard which then detected the backup image. It was so easy and fast.

Now im having to use third party software for backups, the recovery method in the case of an OS corruption would mean that i have to boot from some kind of rescue disc or bootable USB stick in order to then restore the image.

Is there any thing i can use to create a backup image that I'm able to restore in the exact same way Im used to?

What exactly is it that the Windows recovery wizard recognises as a backup image it can restore from?

Or am i at a dead end and i now have no option other than to boot from a rescue disc (WindowsPE for example) in order to then use the third party backup software to restore from an image?

Sorry for the long drawn out question. I just wanted to make it very clear what i was wanting here.

    Thanks in advance

Using network hard drive for backup

It depends what sort of backup you want to do. If you're happy just backing up regular files, then there are a bazillion (really, that many!) different bits of freeware to do that. There is a good list here:

Download Back Up Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks

and pretty much all of them can do network backups. Some even have fancy options like encryption. Really, the most useful thing is just being able to schedule them and know they ran OK.

You may also want to make a system image backup too, and you'll find that software in the very same list.

I don't have Windows 8 as yet, so I'm afraid I can't suggest any for that platform. Personally, I use Clonezilla for image backups.
