    Windows Boot issues

    Hey everyone,

I have an hp envy 14 sleekbook which had a 500 gb HDD. I have installed a samsung 256gb ssd in the laptop. I tried to install windows 10 recently on the ssd. Everything in the installation process was fine but when my laptop booted after the process it gave the error that bootable device not found.

I got the windows to boot by pressing esc as the laptop starts. Then i go to the boot options. There are two. One is booting from the notebook HDD while the other one is booting from EFI. I chose the EFI option. An explorer pops up with an EFI folder. I go into it. There are two folders - Microsoft and Boot. I go into Boot. There is an .EFI file present which i press enter on and then my laptop goes into the OS boot manager.

I have searched all over the forums but cannot find anything to fix this issue. Everytime I turn on my laptop I have to do this. Please help me on how to solve this. I have tried to go to the boot menu in the BIOS and there are no options for setting priorities for individual hard drives.

I was running Windows 8.1 before which worked absolutely fine.

    :)

If you have the Windows 10 Pro key, why not just use it to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from Home instead?

Good question. Check your BIOS, maybe it has the capability to run boot manager on its own.

Create a Kyhi recovery drive USB flash drive or DVD:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

Disconnect the HDD, leave only the SSD connected. Boot from Kyhi's recovery drive. Run Macrium Reflect. Run the fix windows startup problems utility under the restore menu. The computer should boot from the SSD with only it connected. Once it does, then you can reconnect the HDD for storage.

Since Im on a laptop Id have to go to a lot of trouble to remove the HDD. I have run the Windows startup recovery from a bootable win 10 usb but that did not help.

A quick look at the log file of the startup repair shows that it considers the windows to be on the HDD instead of the SSD. This seems to be the main problem. Any solutions to fix this would be helpful

You can try the Macrium Reflect startup repair anyway. If it detects Windows on both the HDD and the SSD it will ask you which one you want to add. Then I think it will ask you where you want the boot files to go.

Once you get booted into Windows again, post a screenshot of disk management, please. Also, please widen the columns as shown in the tutorial so we can read all the information in them:

For some reason if you have the ssd in sata 0/1 the first spot with other hdds installed it likes to hang on installing or put the boot sector/partition on secondary drives. The cure seems to be unhooking all other drives till after windows is installed.

Did you find any other solution to this problem. I remember encountering the same problem when installing Win 8.1 but somehow I got it to work by using a software to rebuild the boot table and then using legacy mode rather than UEFI as default.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix it this time.

I would try swapping the physical positions of the SSD and the HDD so that the SSD is on the first SATA port and the HDD is on the second SATA port.

Unfortunately at the moment I cannot take apart my laptop. Is there any other way to do it without opening the laptop?

You can try to repair the boot up issue with a rescue disk can make one in system settings under update and security then click backup. Click on go to and backup (windows 7) then click make a system repair disk, it states as you're going through the menus that this works for windows 10 even though it's a win 7 classic settings menu ran from your win 10 environment. Can also try Macrium Reflect software and create recovery media through that software to a usb drive that will give you tools in a windows PE environment believe you just need a iso of your win 10 or the actual dvd. Hope this helps.

Oh make a restore point first if you can

NavyLCDR probably gave you the best answer of all i just read back and saw his post, he linked
