    Windows Boot up Issue

    Hi All

After doing a clean install of Windows 10, everything had been running OK for the first few days then I started experiencing a few issues. When working in a program (mostly excel) you click on the drop down arrow and it is empty, or you click on exit and the save dialogue box is empty. Using the Windows key + X the list is blank. See the attached screen captures. There are still boot issues where it stops halfway through the boot sequence.

Could this be the Graphics Card causing the issue.

possibly but I am still thinking the SSD is the issue and has corrupted again , run CHKDSK again , and see if it has errors again....

another possibly is that the SSD is running on incompatible Storage drivers and is also slowly corrupting the drive data. Eg I had this issue with the Intel ICH10 Sata Controller and the Win10 Supplied version 13 driver ....no issues with the ver.11 or 12 Drivers though.

if the SSD is under warranty try RMAing it

    Hi Kbird

The CHKDSK seems OK, see attachment.

    Windows Boot up Issue

    Hi

Same errors as last time , one I wasn't familiar with but looks like it was common in XP, but no MFT (master fat table) errors this time , how may times have you run it ?

    Google

A RMA = Return Materials/Merchandise Authorisation or getting a new SSD under Warranty. I would call Dell and talk to them , it looks like a fairly new system ? Even if their warranty is up the HDD/SSD warranty maybe longer , you specs don't give that info.

Please back up EVERYTHING important on the drive if you haven't already, pics, docs etc etc to an external , as you maybe seeing the beginning of the End .

My apologies, the system on my profile is my laptop. The issue pertains to my PC. The spec of that is as follows.

    System: Self build
    OS: Windows 10 Pro
    Mother Board: Asus X99-A/USB 3.1
    CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4-2666
Graphics Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB
    PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W
Hard Drive: Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256GB

    3 Other HD for Storeage
    USB Storeage drive

So it could be the SSD then?

    Windows Boot up Issue

Run CHKDSK a few more times for sure .....

I also always disable Link State Power Management in the Power Scheme Options as it used to cause issues with my Plextor SSD in this computer but have seen reports of the same thing with the Samsung drives.

    I guess you don't want to hear I have RMA'd (1) Asus X99A , (3) X99A-3.1's , (2) 5820k CPU's and (2) set of Ram since Feb ? and I am currently battling a X99A II *Smile so much for my 1st new Comp in 4-5 yrs ....

Are you one the newest X99 Bios ? some had new Intel RST OROM's in them too.

    X99-A/USB 3.1 | Motherboards | ASUS USA

What Sata Driver (AHCI/RAID) are you using ?

Does 850 Pro have latest Firmware ? some had a bug in TRIM that caused Data Corruption last yr I think

that should keep you busy for a few hours *Smile ....night.

    Hi ,
those 4 CHKDSK files are clean but they were run in windows without the /F switch so I am not sure it has done all the checks that a Boot-Time scan does or not ?

Any weird errors the latest few days ?

Spoke to someone who had a 3.1 too , he didn't see your issues but preferred the 2101 bios on his 5820K until he got a Broadwell Chip , then had to use the 3101 Bios like you. 2101 was what i was using too until it died etc and got RMA'd.

    Windows Boot up Issue

    Hi Kbird

I am currently running another SSD with the operating system on it. The SSD with the issues is still installed (as drive E/) and has been reformatted and has a few programs installed on it, to monitor it.

Attached below is CHKDSK logs of the E/ drive, using the f parameter.
At the moment I have no issues with the new C/ drive!

Do you require CHKDSK of the new drive.

Looks like it is at it again! Went out for an hour came back booted up the PC. It powers up, then stops. Lights are still on the mother board etc. Had to shut down, then power back up, then it then boots OK.

Oh damn..... well with my issues with the X99A-3.1, I would say perhaps you have a MB problem , did you look at the MB diagnostic Code on the LED Board before rebooting ? can be helpful.....

what USB devices are plugged in ? see my posts in this thread about that....... I used to get similar issues every second boot , switching the xHCI controller to Auto help with that issue, mostly......

Problem with my USB devices on Windows 10. - Windows 10 Forums

The 3 new CHKDSK files.... 1st one is showing security descriptor Errors again, (fixed 0x9) ) no MFT Errors though so my guess is you reformatted the drive , made it E:\ and it was ok for a day or two then corruption started again. More research needed on SD Errors perhaps.

See if the new C: drive has SD Errors on it too in which case I'd suspect the Sata Controller/Driver , so possibly a MB issue ?
