If the chipset drivers work then you are nearly done.
If not post a zip so we can troubleshoot the computer environment: BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums
It will collect any dump files along with msinfo32 etc

3. Eagle,

I looked for them but really didn't find any that I thought would work, my board is an MSI 760GMA-P34 FX. I asked my son what he did with the disc, we built this about a year ago. He said he had no idea, but I wasn't sure a win 7 or win 8 driver would work on win 19.

Unk

Will try to what you suggested next. I've tried everything I can think of.

Thanks

Seeing that the Win7 64 is latest MSI offers for your motherboard, it should be compatible.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste these commands:

1) winver (in the pop up about windows view your windows version and build and post into the thread)
2) sfc /scannow
3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

4) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click edit then on copy > paste into the thread

In case there is non-Microsoft software or another application that is misbehaving or blocking updates place your computer in clean boot:

5) msconfig (in the pop up system configuration > move the dot from normal startup to selective startup > uncheck load startup items > click service tab > in left lower corner check hide all Microsoft services > in the lower right side click disable all > click apply or ok > do not reboot)

6) taskmgr (in the pop up task manager > click on the start up tab > click on status so that the column sorts with enable rising to the top > right click on each row with enable and change to disable)

7) shutdown /r (you will reboot the computer so that it is in clean boot)

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...oot-in-windows
How to perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

8) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste: chkdsk /x /f /r (this may take many hours so run this over night)

9) run one of the SMART tests on your drives:
CrystalDiskInfo - Software - Crystal Dew World: CrystalDiskMark - Software - Crystal Dew World

HD Tune: HD Tune website

Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring: https://www.hdsentinel.com/
When the SMART test has completed open the Microsoft snipping tool and make images of the results to post into the thread.

10) Run Sea tools for windows on your drive using SMART, short and long generic tests:
How to use SeaTools for Windows
How to use SeaTools for Windows
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

11) see these links for additional audio troubleshooting:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-sg/...sound-problems
[FIX] Audio Not Working After Upgrading To Windows 10

12) These may need to be troubleshooted:
msdt.exe
ntdll.dll
AppxDeploymentFailureBlue with windows.integrityExtension
Microsoft Corporation.DeviceDiagnostic.4.0

13) The bios in your computer: BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. V25.0, 5/28/2013
Please check to see if this is the most up to date version.

These are some of the drivers that you commented on in post # 3:
"I am completely up to date on windows updates.

The 3 files listed are

drmk.sys
hdaudbus.sys
portcls.sys

all 3 are modified on 3/18/17. I also copied these from another computer as I thought one of them may have been corrupted."

You may be able to find the drivers listed using file explorer to verify that they are present. The only one on the driver list was hdaudbus:
Code: HDAudBus Microsoft UAA Bus Driv Microsoft UAA Bus Driv Kernel Manual Stopped OK FALSE FALSE 28,672 40,960 0 1/26/1988 10:21:45 PM C:\Windows\system32\drivers\HDAudBus.sys 4,096
This driver is the only Realtek driver (ethernet) already installed:
Code: rt640x64 Realtek RT640 NT Drive Realtek RT640 NT Drive Kernel Manual Running OK TRUE FALSE 0 581,632 0 10/5/2016 6:32:55 AM C:\Windows\system32\drivers\rt640x64.sys
rt640x64.sys Realtek NICDRV 8169 PCIe GBE Family Controller driver http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

In case you continue to struggle with this problem consider addressing the report of the bad block on the drive (evaluating it with chkdsk /x /f /r and the drive tests using smart, short, and long generics) and performing another clean installation. Then when you are in a "vanilla" installation (no other drivers, applications, files installed) first address the high definition audio controller and see if it can be fixed with no other potentially interfering software/applications.

hmm, I see, well try check disk as suggested above and we will see if there are any problems with windows files. Hopefully that will take care of the "wrong files", other idea would be if neither of these work to try and install a different version of windows 10.

Couldn't run SFC in my version of Win10, pressed Win+X, but no option for either Command Prompt. MS must have eliminated in latest release as search said it should be menu option.

EDIT: Figured out how to run Admin CMD prompt.

Type CMD in search bar
HOLD down CTRL + SHIFT and press ENTER

Windows won't let me install the Win 7 drivers for my chipset, it keeps telling me that the MS version is the latest up to date driver.

I continue to do Windows update and keep getting a few all along mostly for Defender, so I don't think anything is blocking the Updates.

Apparently, my motherboard is not compatible with Win10, as reviews on Egghead have people complaining about the same thing, in particular that the sound doesn't work.

Which is ODD because the old HD has win10 on it and it still works, and this one worked with WIN10 until I did a clean install.

IF I buy a cheap WIN 10 soundcard will it work, or will I have to upgrade to a Win10 mainboard and processor?

Hey,

have you tried opting in for windows insider builds and updating your version to a newer? probably for the slow ring so that you will maintain the stability of your system, here is the official tool to upgrade your pc: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

but in other words you should not buy a sound card just to spend extra money when you can just fix it without the need of spending money on it.

Edit: as seen from the post below, your windows installation might be corrupted or limited, since the cleanup process failed. Although the error related to the online clean up is a network connection drop, so you might just want to retry the same way again.

12. Issue is SOLVED....

I went to system to RESET windows and in the middle of the RESET; the process crashed, so I had to do another clean install of Windows 10. After some minor difficulties, mostly due to lag, I got the clean install up and this time I had sound.

So, I;m guessing on yesterday's clean install of windows 10, that somehow the System files that control the Audio got corrupted; which is a little odd because that clean install came off without a hitch. Smoothest install of a windows operating system I ever had; up until the time I had to do it all over again.

Now in Device Manager, I have a SOUND, VIDEO and GAME Controller heading.

I guess the moral of the story is, before rebuilding all of your programs, files, etc. after an install; Check Device Manager to make sure all drivers are good, all headings are in the right place or prepare to spend the weekend rebuilding your system again.

Thanks to everyone for all of the help and suggestions.
