    Windows can't complete Update

All of a sudden I'm having trouble with Windows Update. Every time I shut down my computer Windows tells me it's updating and don't turn off the computer. It does its thing and then shuts down, as usual. Then when boot the computer up Windows tells me it is completing the update and to not shut the computer down, as usual. Then when it gets to 100% it says, "We couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes, do not turn off your computer. Then it restarts and goes back to "undoing changes". Then finally it boots up.

This whole process, over and over again is taking a lot of time! Probably about 10 minutes to boot up! Obviously Windows is trying to install the same update over and over and it keeps failing. When I go into Windows Update it tells me the failed update is KB3185614, "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 version 1511 for x64 based systems"

Should I turn off automatic updates? Can I delete this update? Anyone else experiencing this? Other updates were installed successfully on the same date.

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

    Hi Robert,

It seems that you are having a software conflict. To isolate your concern, we would like to get more information.

    1. Are you getting an error message?

    2. What have you done so far to resolve the issue?

Please run the Windows Update Troubleshooter:

    Download it from this link.

We will be waiting for your response.

    Windows can't complete Update

There's an update troubleshooter you can run: Enter trouble into Cortana or the search box, or launch Troubleshooting from the Control Panel. Under the heading "System and Security" click "Fix Problems with Windows Update." That launches a troubshooter for the Windows Update function. Please run that and let us know what results it produces, if any. If you're lucky, it might even fix your problem! ;-)

I am having the same problem. Troubleshooting program says "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem". Glad to hear it is just not me.

Well @EdTittel I really thought you had it figured out. The trouble shooter found a problem and said that it fixed it. Trouble shooter said, "Windows Update Components must be Repaired ------- Fixed". But then when I did the update the exact thing happened again. Tried it twice, both times trouble shooter identified the same problem and both times it said it had fixed it and both times the update failed.

    What do we try next?

  7. I am also getting this update loop for KB3185614, every time I have finished with the PC the PC goes through the same process of trying to install the update, and when it restarts it undoes the update as it was unable to complete the process.

Is the forum dead or do they just don't know how to fix this issue?

I'd like to bump this thread back to the top! This is still an issue. I was successful in stopping this endless update loop, for update KB3185614, only by blocking the offending update with wushowhide. Now windows update is trying to install "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1607" and I am having the same problem. Every time I run the troubleshooter for Windows Update it says it finds and fixes the following problem, "Windows update components must be repaired ----- fixed", but it must not be fixing it because it finds this problem every time I run it and the update still will not complete successfully.

Other security updates for Windows are being successfully installed but not these big cumulative updates, why? Is my only real option just to hide it with wushowhide? I know others are having this same issue, any ideas @EdTittel or any of the other experts! Twenty minute boot times just don't cut it!

Sorry didn't see this wasn't getting attention. This issue is widely discussed on many forum threads. There's a so-called "script fix" available as documented in my Windows Update -- Reset in Windows 10 that you might find helpful. If you work your way through this stuff and you're still stuck, conventional wisdom is a clean install should set you straight. If you have to take that route, I'd try an upgrade install first (it may fix your problem and it won't require you to reinstall all applications and tweak your system back to your satisfaction as a clean install will).

[PS: just found another helpful thread here in this very forum: kb3194798 - Windows 10 Forums. See the part that references a specific TechNet fix.]

  12. I tried to do a manual install of the update using the media creation tool and it said this "Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because your current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory, or you're trying to install an older version of Windows."

  13. Windows can't complete Update

I see I'm not the only one having this ridiculous problem of not being able to update my OS. I had succeeded in upgrading to Win 10 from Win 8, then had the misfortune of having malware installed on my computer. Of course, my recovery media didn't work so I was forced to reinstall Win 8. Since then, about 2 weeks now, I cannot get Windows to update. I use my computer for work and have actually MISSED DAYS because the OS either will not update or it will finally detect - and on occassion download them - but take HOURS upon HOURS - to end in a continuous loop. I've tried every fix, automated and manual, on every MS site I've come across and nothing. It's beyond frustrating and STILL no fix! How long has 8 been out? Who cares? Obviously not MS.

  14. I've found this tool to work great for upgrading Win 10 computers to the latest OS when Software update was acting funky. It's oddly annoying to find the link, but it seems to bypass the Windows Update system and does an in-place upgrade of your system to the latest version. I used it to upgrade my tablet to W10A and it created a windows.old folder.

  15. wow they really can't get there own operating system to update properly can they, first it said "Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because your current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory, or you're trying to install an older version of Windows."

and now using the above link you provided it says "Something went wrong: You can contact Microsoft support for help with this error. Here is the error code 0xc1900204."
