Discus and support Windows defender causing slow icon display in AntiVirus, Firewalls and System Security to solve the problem; Yep it's a shame because other than this I like MSE / Defender too.     Yep it's a shame because other than this I like MSE / Defender too. I read elsewhere suggestion to add explorer.exe as an exception. Whilst I'm sure this would work it would in my mind completely negate real time protection, might as well switch it off entirely. For now some exclusions are helping. Whilst I haven't excluded the downloads folder I have improved this by tidying it and putting some stuff in sub folders so that any single folder doesn't have a load of executables.

    Defender is well received for being lightweight and non intrusive. Whilst that is true to a degree as it doesn't nag and doesn't interfere running software or apps. However I feel it is intrusive if it effects things like the drawing of icons when browsing explorer. A pretty common user interaction.

    i hope MS looks at this but I guess it's doubtful if it's been happening for a few years
