    Windows Defender definition updates

Has anyone else noticed that the size of the daily definition download has dramatically increased? Prior to FCU the average size for me was under 1mb, now it has balloned to just under 30mb. This is of course downloading via Windows Update. Is this some kind of unusual quirk with my machine, or has definition delivery radically changed with FCU?

    :)

    W10 Pro update from 06/13/2017

"We noticed that the question hasn't been marked as Answered yet and we were wondering if you resolved the issue."

No, but I experienced the problem again earlier today. As I do every weekend during my weekly recording and

administrative tasks. I was just thinking about this report, and researching how to report this/these error(s) to

MS. Perhaps you could explain to me how that error reporting process is accomplished? I looked back in my

previous recordings, and I can clearly see that the error(s) were not present on my 06/11/2017 recording, but

had appeared on my 06/18/2017 recording. This is my update inventory(reverse sequence) for the period

just preceding 06/11, and just succeeding 06/18. As you can see, except for Defender reloads, not much has

occurred until 06/13, and nothing much after.

I am 100% confident that something in these 06/13 updates caused the error(s) I am now having. And, don't

forget the unrelated EDGE error that prevents basic authentication steps for site access.

So, how do I submit this problem to MS for review?

    Windows Defender definition updates

I don't know about the size of the download, But I can look in Defenders and see when it update definition, ran health scan. run a manual update later in the afternoon, be another definition, do another manual update around 8:30pm and there is another definition.

Windows Defender gets 2 or more updates a day.
On Saturday & Sunday, it's usually just one update.
Not sure on the size of each, but the download is fast on my end.

I'm on a metered connection so I can see the size prior to downloading. I was also accustomed to two downloads per day, each been well under 1mb. All that has changed with FCU. I can't understand why it would require a file of that size on a daily basis. Data is fairly limited and very expensive for me at the moment, so I might have to abandon WD for a more reasonable solution if this continues

Not sure, I believe any AV would run up your data use on metered.

I use to use one of those air cards from AT&T, it had a 5GB monthly data plan. no roll over, several times I used more than 5GB, paid extra too. I had Norton AV.

Yeah, I sure don't complain about the size of downloads for my security.
If he/she had paid av protection the updates would happen 5+ time a day.
Better question is would you rather be protected or would you rather be infected with malware and have your stuff stolen ?

  10. You could try cloud AV, which does not download updates, but checks everything online.

Not sure, how much bandwidth would that take, but it sure would be interesting to see.

    Like Panda or McAfee

You don't seem to understand the underlying issue. It's not a question of been averse, per se, to downloading a file of that size. Windows Update is designed to download incremental updates: only that portion of a file that has changed over a given time period. Whilst previous file sizes of under 1mb would suggest a modest addition of new definitions, to combat new threats, a file of 30mbs would suggest a huge amount of new definitions on a daily basis; that scenario is not credible. I'm thinking that something has gone awry with the process since FCU.

Why are you downloading it separate from either Windows Update or Windows Defender Security Center>Virus&Threat>Protection Updates?
If you're not using either of those two methods, your downloading like your pc already doesn't have Windows Defender.
If that's the case you have nobody to blame, but yourself on your high data usage for Windows Defender.

    PromU,

The update download sizes identified by WU are often meaningless so you do need to measure it yourself if you want to find out the truth. You need to record your data usage both before and after an update to get a meaningful result - Control panel, Network & sharing centre, {click on the network's name next to the label Connections}, note the data used both before & after updating Windows defender manually through its UI. You need to hope that other network use does not occur while you are measuring or your results will be invalid.

I have just done this on one FCU (x86) computer and the data used was 36MB [but on both a Ver 1703 (x64) computer as well as on another ver 1709 (x64) computer, it was only 2MB]. Perhaps a major change to definitions was required for a particular reason & the first computer had been slightly more out-of-date than the other two {they had all been updated at some stage yesterday}. I'm going to watch update sizes for a few days to check on this.

Thanks for publishing this warning. I had not been bothering to monitor Windows defender update sizes for over a year.

Of course, it could be worse. Bitdefender replaces entire application modules at every update [the minimum you can get away with in Bitdefender is 3GB a month for each computer and that is only by reducing updates to once a day].

    Denis
