And why can't Microsoft get its act together regarding antivirus detection? Every year its some new tool with a different name. Yet they all seem to do the same thing: Look for virus problems. I'm using Win7.I have Windows Defender in Control Panel it doesn't launch.I have the Malicious Software Removal Tool and that works. But it never finds anything. I have Security Essentials which works. Probably has never found anything. So do these 3 things do the same tasks in Windows 7? * Moved from Windows 7/Security

    :)

  2. What happened to the malicious software removal tool?

    FWIW:

I've no problems opening the link with Firefox and IE:
    https://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/malware-removal.aspx

Perhaps try with another browser or use InPrivate browsing...

In case, you still have troubles, I just copy/paste here:

    Malicious Software Removal Tool

Skip the details and download the tool

The Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool is an antimalware utility that checks computers running Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP*, Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008, and Windows
Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software—including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom—and helps remove malware and any other infections found.

When the detection and malware removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malware was detected and removed.

*The Malicious Software Removal Tool will continue to be provided for Windows XP through July 14, 2015; it will also continue to be delivered automatically via Windows Update and for download via the Download Center.

    New antimalware additions
We have added detection and cleaning capabilities for:

    See the
    list of malicious software
    cleaned by this tool.

Note: The version of the tool delivered by Microsoft Update and Windows Update runs in the background and then reports if a malware infection is found. To run this tool more than once a month, use the version on this web page or install
the version that is available at the
    Microsoft Download Center
    .

Because computers can appear to function normally when infected, it's a good idea to run this tool regularly even if your computer seems to be fine. You should also use up-to-date antivirus software, such as

    Microsoft Security Essentials
, to help protect your computer from other malware.

    Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8
include antivirus and antispyware software called Windows Defender. Windows Defender for Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 8 replaces Microsoft Security Essentials.
