Windows 10: Windows Defender no longer asking for connection permissions. even after reset to default...

I'm certain that at one point Windows behaved in a way that whenever an application that utilizes Internet attempted to access Internet, windows would prompt the user to allow or deny.This was a great way to intuitively teach the firewall what to block and what to allow without needing to create and manage rules manually.This feature seems to either have gone away or gotten broken on my PC.New installs of programs do not ask for permissions anymore.I tried to reset the Windows Defender to default settings expecting it to now re-prompt me for any new program that would need access, but that did

Reset Windows 10 file permissions to default

• Are you receiving any error message while accessing any files?

I suggest you to follow the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: Startup troubleshooter.

• Open the Task manager. Here’s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
  
• Click File > Run New Task
• Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
• Type Powershell
• Type the following in the Powershell prompt:

$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest


6. Close the Powershell window

7. Reboot

Method 2: If you are facing issues accessing files, then I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

This may be caused by incorrect permissions on the files.

You can fix this using these steps:

• Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
  
• Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
• Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok

Default drive permissions

If you need to reset default permissions on that drive, here are the steps:

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd

Form the resulting list, right click Command Prompt and choose 'Run as Administrator'

Paste this command into Command Prompt and press Enter

icacls "D:\" /t /q /c /reset

 

Is there a utility to reset all W10 permissions back to defaults?

This resets permissions for default junctions if you've messed about taking ownership of folders that you should have left alone:

Folder name blank

It uses setacl.exe (built in)
