    ...and I can't run the scan. What is going on?

    There's no issue with Internet or network connection.
    To run defender 8.1 offline, the bios has to be set to <standard> boot to startup from the USB only...

    Windows Defender - virus and spyware definitions not updating.

    I get the pop up message that my virus and spyware definations are out of date. When I open defender and click 'update' it goes through the process then when that’s done I get the message 'The virus and spyware definitions didn't update on (date & time)
    because of an Internet or connectivity problem.

    It shows ‘Definitions last updated 08/07/2016' and the time.

    This has been going on for some time. I've done several full virus scans since this problem started but that hasn't solved the problem.

    My laptop had Windows 8 installed when I bought it and soon after I took to free option to update to Wndows 10.

    Suggestions please.
