    Windows Defender Offline Scan

    Some advice please

Ive done a couple of 'offline' scans but when my laptop finished there is no indication/feedback at all and Protection history says 'No recent action' What does that mean? no scans done? no suspicious files found?

Having done research I've found MPLog-YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS.log file located in theC:\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

It has several entries starting with Internal signature match:subtype=Lowfi for my D: drive I only have a C: drive presumably defender is creating an alias?

Some of these I recognise like x86\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroRd32.exe which I don't use but loaded with the operating system, and \Dassault Systemes\DraftSight there are also other dlls and executables and a couple of batch files I've written with DOS like del C:\Temp\bin\temp\*.*

It also failed when the test was offline i.e. when I had set it running and after a few minutes pulled the network cable and gone to bed.

[Cloud] Engine is requesting config to do cloud query [regular network].

2020-06-13T23:05:30.939Z On demand scan closed without completion. But no notification back to the user at all that it had failed.

    so:

is there no problem except poor quality user interface?

are any of these files suspect and should have been reported as such?

    or is Defender not working/defeated?

    or some other reason.

My laptop is fully up-to-date with green ticks against everything but I was checking because it has been showing massive unwarranted processor use i7 with possibly inadequate cooling.

    :)

Defender Periodic Scanning or Offline Scanning?

That link does suggest it's useful to use Defender offline scanning in addition to periodic scanning and a third party real time anti virus (e.g. Kaspersky).

    offline scan by win defender

    Hi,

To further assist you with your concern with Windows Defender, follow the steps below:

    • Open the Run window by pressing Window + R button.
    • Then type services.msc and hit "Enter".
    • Look for Windows defender service in the list and right click on it and select start.
    • Once Windows defender is opened try to do the offline scan on that window.

Let us know how it goes.
