Eset is a much better protector than windows defender. Think of all the glitches and bugs Windows 10 experiences, where as Eset works on one thing only... protection. That said where I work there is about 1000++ computers that are protected with Eset. This was done by a very competent IT staff and research. As posted above, nothing is 100%, but I believe Eset is a leader.

I have Eset and it will catch things Defender misses, and it runs flawlessly. I tried this against my other pc.

Windows 10 is so glitchy... my laptop may boot right up some times other times it black screens and I have to hard boot it and it plays the Win 7 song, often it run hotter and slower (vents blown clean often), some forum sites stall when entering user name or password, some don't...... Just more reasons to use a site dedicated to one thing

Eset will turn off defender as that is the way it shows in my control panel...... though in settings it shows it as on, but the slide switch is gray instead of blue in color, but says on. see attachments

    My 2 cents worth

Sorry Mike it was not meant to sound that way. I was reading in another forum about defender and other av programs getting or not getting along and the many, man fixes and failed fixes. It seems what works for a few does not work for just as many. The symptimatic problems are the same, though the solutions, and at times, if any are numerous.
I think my point is windows 10 is in infancey, has a great deal of room for improvement. It at times is unstable, and does many odd things...........often these glitches appear over and over, sometimes a few times, and sometimes once. There is often no sound reasoning.
I experience windows 10 problems pretty much everyday.... black screen boot up, have to hard boot and it plays win 7 song, even though win 7 "window old" file have time stamped out? Have done so much and nothing get better.
My defender, as you saw, shows on in one spot (though grey not bright blue in settings location) and off in another. I believe Eset has overrid it and shut off defender?
Also win 10 really does not allow you to select which uodates you decide to take, unless you but win 10 pro, at least that is my understanding.
This is typed from a tablet as win 10 is giving me grief getting into tahoeforum.com right now, but works fine here?
I hope this explains what I meant better as this was my answer in the other post I mentioned above.

I used Eset security good few years in XP and W7 times but than it became expensive to keep and bloated. In W8, MS instituted Windows Defender but it was on pretty basic level as protection is concerned. After few scandals that shook up AV industry couple of years ago and failure of AV programs to develop to properly support new windows versions I decided to give WD a shot and it didn't disappoint. It became good enough for personal use. It's lite enough even for slow systems while still offering decent protection. It's data base is updated as many as 5 times a day and that shows degree of care MS is putting in it.
Like any other consumer grade AV, it doesn't offer full protection and other, specialized programs are needed, like Malwarebytes for instance. Not leaving anything to chance although I'm pretty cautious around internet, I also use other specialized programs like ADWcleaner to comb thru system periodically.
At the end, even Kaspersky Labs have great doubts about protection AV programs provide and advocate extreme precautions on internet and otherwise.

Yes well said, no matter what AV is used common sense must prevail and no AV is 100% fool proof.

Any ideas about my win 10 dilemma? I am open to suggestions? *Smile

In order to understand this, you need understand, how AV disables WD. It is done via this key:

    reg add "HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender" /v "DisableAntiSpyware" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

Basically it freezes WD, including its settings, so whatever you had set before will be shown.

If you would disable WD before installing AV, you would probably see this:

TairikuOkami ah ha! Thank You! That does make a lot of sense! I had Defender disabled when using Win 7. I would turn it on occasionally as a back up to Eset, or free Malwarebyte turned on occasionally. As far as I remember it was off in Win 7 when I upgraded to Win 10. Though the upgrade likely turned defender on and when I reinstalled Eset it did what I have in my screen shot, which is why it differs from your screen shot. Eset and Defender do not jive together too well.

Am I on the right track?

I came across two noticeable differences in Defender after doing a clean install of Win 10 Anniversary Pro v1607 14393.10 and my 3rd-party AV:

    1. You can still open the Defender interface from within the Control Panel (where you previously could not)

    windows defender on/off [IMG]

    2. Defender now offers an option to work with your 3rd party AV (called Limited Periodic Scanning)

It is off by default so I think I'll pass on the Limited Periodic Scanning Option for now.

You may be best off doing clean install without any 3rd party AVs or windows behavior changing programs. Once you set everything up to your liking, you can make a full system backup and keep it in case of trouble.

Its not actually showing as on per se, if you notice the checkbox is greyed out which means WD is disabled altogether. That is the normal behaviour.
