    Windows Defender Security Center: Can't turn on 'Check for apps and files'


    My 'Check Apps and files is off' and I can't turn it on. It says 'This setting is managed by your administrator. I also turn off SmartScreen for Microsoft edge and SmartScreen for Microsoft Store app but it's still not change.


    Please help me select it myself.

    windows defender & security center services keep turning off


    Are you running any other AV or did you have one running in the past? If you didn't use an uninstaller for the AV, then the remnants of it could be causing the problem. Normally any time you install an AV it disables Defender by default.

    If you are getting any error codes please list those, that will be helpful in helping you.

    As torre suggested, might be a good idea to do a reset or even a reinstall.

    windows defender security center check app and file is not working

    windows defender security center -> check app and file is grayed out.. i checked my administrator setting. all settings were in default value . also i done clean boot but nothing works. i don't use any third party anti-virus, please suggest me what to do..

    Windows Defender Blocking Installations of Downloaded Apps

    Hi Craig,

    There's a possibility that the SmartScreen option is on that's why you're unable to install downloaded apps. Let's try to turn it off and see if it helps. See the steps below:

    • Open Windows Defender Security Center from your Start menu, desktop, or taskbar.
    • Click on the App and browser control button on the left side of the window.
    • Click on Off in the Check apps and files section.
