    Windows Defender stopped scanning / updating virus definitions


    Hello everybody,


    My Windows Defender stopped scanning / updating virus definitions, I've had to do these things manually since the Win 10 April 2018 upgrade.


    Re-installed the whole Win 10, didn't fix the problem.


    Today I completed the Win 10 October 2018 upgrade. Problem remained.


    Tried to fix the issue through Windows Scheduler, on Defenders pre-defined activity "Scheduled Scan". I added new time triggers (it was blank from start), and none of these triggers ran any scan.


    Please, how do I get Defender to work, and do all updates and scans automatically? If I have to do it manually, the system is under great threat.

    Hi Mary,

    As per the issue description you are unable to scan your computer using Windows Defender. While scanning your system you are getting an error message "Your PC couldn't be scanned. This program's service has stopped. You can start the service manually or
    restart you computer, which will start the service."

    The issue could be if the service responsible for Windows defender either get corrupted or is stopped. Try the steps provided below and see if it helps you to fix the issue.

    Method 1

    I would suggest you to check if the services responsible for Windows Defender are running. If it is running make sure the status is Automatic. You may follow the steps provided below to check the services.

    • Press Windows key + R to open run box.
    • Type services.msc and hit enter.
    • There should be 2 services: Windows Defender Service
      and Windows Defender Network14.
    • Right click on each service and start the service if not running.

    Method 2

    If issue persists, try to refer the articles mentioned below and see if it helps you to fix the issue.

    windows defender scanning stopped

    whenever I want to scan my laptop using windows defender it says that my PC is protected and when i click the scan, it starts scanning and then stop in the middle part of the scan. It says that

    "Your PC couldn't be scanned. This program's service has stopped. You can start the service manually or restart you computer, which will start the service."then it will say that

    real-time protection: off

    virus and spyware definitions: out of date so i will click the start. and it says that virus and spyware definitions: created 21 days ago and because the real time protection is off so i will click the turn it on and I will scan it again and the result
    will be the same. even though I restarted and PC and when i update the virus and spyware definitions a dialog box pop up in the middle of installing "Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated. This app couldn't check for virus and spyware definition
    updates. Check your internet or network connection and try again". and when i close the dialog box it says that virus and spyware definitions is up to date..

    need help for this repeating and repeating problem in scanning...

    Windows Defender stopped scanning / updating virus definitions

    Windows Defender - virus and spyware definitions not updating.

    I get the pop up message that my virus and spyware definations are out of date. When I open defender and click 'update' it goes through the process then when that’s done I get the message 'The virus and spyware definitions didn't update on (date & time)
    because of an Internet or connectivity problem.

    It shows ‘Definitions last updated 08/07/2016' and the time.

    This has been going on for some time. I've done several full virus scans since this problem started but that hasn't solved the problem.

    My laptop had Windows 8 installed when I bought it and soon after I took to free option to update to Wndows 10.

    Suggestions please.
