Windows 10: Windows Defender won't update virus definition

    Windows Defender won't update virus definition


    I received a Windows security alert saying that virus and threat protection definition is out of date. Clicking on the "update" button just turns endlessly. Tried a couple of different ways to manually update https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates; running the batch script to trigger an update returns an error "ERROR: Signature Update failed with hr=80070652", and running "mpam-fe.exe" does not seem to do anything. Any suggestions on what to do next? Thanks!

    Windows 10 Defender Updates

    My windows defender {windows 10) won"t update... It says " Virus and Spyware definitions could't be updated. Check your internet and network connection and try again. There is nothing wrong with my connections. how do I fix this?

    not sure I follow you. The security scanner you suggested does not indeed find any malicious software on my PC. however this does not solver the issue of windows failing to download the latest virus definition. It still complains about internet connection.
    Also tried to remove Microsoft essentials as lacrumb suggested but it's not listed in my programs for some reason.
