Windows 10: Windows Defender

I would like to know how I 'set up' Windows Defender to find any PUP that could come into my desktop. It can't be clicked on by 'default' surprisingly.

Thanks for the reply. On pressing Windows+s I get, Power Shell, Power Shell (x86), Power Shell ISE & Power Shell ISE (x86).
Which is the one I should choose please,? I'm always very wary of 'playing around' with the registry.

I would choose just plain Powershell, but in truth, it doesn't really matter. They all support the same commands, and will do the same registry changes.

 

I have tried all the instructions in and entered Set-MPPreference-PUAprotection, a message always comes up 'not recognised as internal or external'.

 

That error message is only produce in a command prompt. You should be using an elevated PowerShell, not a command prompt.

 

I have been using elevated Power Shell and only tried the others in the hope it would work.

 

PowerShell commands won't work in a command prompt.

If that's not a typo and you actually typed that, then it's not a valid command.
There should be a space before -PUAprotection

To avoid typos, I usually copy the command from a tutorial and paste it into PowerShell. I have just done that with the command from the tutorial - it worked without error.

 

It was a typo, I have been using 'paste'. It has to be something else, as I've tried all suggestions to no avail.

 

Do you get an error in PowerShell when you run the command? If it's 'Set-MpPreference : You don't have enough permissions to perform the requested operation' then you're not running an elevated PowerShell. If it's something else, what error is reported?

 

I am getting, "not recognised as an internal or external command, operable programme or batch file,'.

I have since downloaded HitmanPro which removed the PUPOnesystemcare but not the PUPDNSUlocker.

Adwcleaner purports to remove both PUP's but it wasn't the case.

Was also advised to change the adaptor settings, in case DNS had changed them, but they were not changed.
