Windows 10: windows doesnt update automatically

You could try
a. Creating a disk image (to give yourself a recovery path should things go wrong) - we recommend everyone use disk imaging routinely anyway
b. Check your disk (chkdsk from an elevated command prompt) as a precautionary routine measure
c. An in-place upgrade repair install (which keeps all programs and most settings)
d. Update your disk image (as a precautionary measure)
e. Run windows update

I'm sure others will make other suggestions.

 

well i ran a chkdsk for now and windows found no problems... im really not good when it comes to creating disk images... do you just create a disk image and then put it on a usb flashdrive?

 

We recommend e.g. Macrium reflect (free). Images can be stored on any sort of disk or convenient storage medium- obviously, just not the one you're imaging.

Plenty of help, documentation and videos on their site and a tutorial here (Tutorial section) to explain this. Look out for incremental and differential backups, and base images e.g. There are even videos on youtube.

Time to update an image of Windows running on a SSD- typically 12 mins or less.

Time to reinstall Windows if you don't have any images to restore - very much longer!

I've had lots of success using it where windows update kept failing.

Worst case , you can go through the updates in small batches instead of all at once , my sons PC had issues doing a lot of updates all at once (he'd saved 25 of them by not updating for ages) and it kept rolling him back as well.

When I used that to do 3-5 at a time instead they all worked.
