Windows explorer crashes can't open external hard drive

I see so many threads for this issue, yet none of those threads have working answers :.

I bought a Toshiba Canvio Advance Portable 2TB External Harddrive about a month ago, and finally got around to using it about a week ago. Used about 500Gb of the memory until it suddenly stopped working. I chalked it up to the fact that the harddrive is on a short cord, so when I move my laptop the harddrive smacks the floor, and this one hit the floor maybe 5 or 6 times. Except now I have a new one. 2 days old. Stopped working suddenly. When it's plugged in, the computer makes the noise like it recognizes a device being connected, but it doesn't show up under Devices and Drives. If I try to open it through the shortcut I created on my desktop, everything freezeschrome, file explorer... everything until I remove the device. The exact second I remove the device, the laptop will unfreeze and tell me there's an error. If I try to start up the laptop with the hard drive connected, it will open up a black screen until i remove the device, then function as normal.

    I've tried:

    1. Swapping around USB ports. Freezes anyway.

    2. Using a third, but same, external harddrive. My original is in the trash, my current 2nd is currently crashing windows over and over, and the third one works fine. I wouldn't be surprised if I left in this third one and it suddenly stopped working also.

    3. Searching for software updates. The website provided on my manual doesn't have any actual downloads. It only says that there will be an update in April. Also, when I >>>>Right Click Start>>Device Manager>>Disk Drives>>Right Click TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 USB Device>>Update Driver, I get a prompt saying that my device is up to date.

    4. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, then restarting the laptop. Nothing changed.

    5. Googling the answer. That lead me to this link on the support page. It's almost my exact problem. Here, customer support tells the person to

    • Restart in safe mode. Which caused my laptop to freeze anyway

    • >>Start>>CMD>>run cmd as admin>>type sfc /scannow>>enter

Now this second part, it actually scanned some files and it said it repaired some corrupted files and stored the logs in a place that didn't exist. After this happened, External Drive E: re-appeared under Devices and Drives. Clicking on this still causes everything to freeze, clicking properties causes everything to freeze for about 10 minutes when a window finally opened up telling me I'm using 0bytes of 0bytes available. I then restarted my laptop and E drive is gone again.

    6. Device not migrated?? If I right click start, then Disk Management. It will literally crash until I remove the device. I remove the device, then it shows all of my memory on the laptop, and of course the E Drive isn't there because I had to remove it. If I plug it back in while it's loaded, everything on the laptop freezes again until removed. If I open Device Manager/Disk Drives, the device is recognized. Actually, if I right click on it there, so, >>>>Right Click Start>>Device Manager>>Disk Drives>>right click TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 USB Device>>Properties>>Events, it tells me there that the device was started and configured, but not migrated. It looks exactly like this:
4/11/2020 6:31:42 PM Device not migrated
    4/11/2020 6:31:42 PM Device configured disk.inf
4/11/2020 6:31:42 PM Device started disk
    4/13/2020 4:31:39 PM Device deleted
4/13/2020 4:31:47 PM Device not migrated
    4/13/2020 4:31:47 PM Device configured disk.inf
4/13/2020 4:31:47 PM Device started disk
I've tried googling the answer to this problem also. But most things involve interacting with the external hard drive, or usb port issues. It's not a port issue, as my mouse works in every port, but the drive does not. I can't interact with the drive because doing so causes the entire laptop to freeze until I remove the device.

    Help please?

    :)

Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

So, I open up My Computer, open my F Drive and boom: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must close". It is really annoying! I am fine everywhere else in explorer, but something just screws up when I try the external HDD (USB) or my thumb drive.

    Can anyone help?
