Windows 10: Windows Explorer refuses search of external drive

Tearing my hair put with Windows 10. I use an external hard drive. I have a new machine (Lenovo Think Pad carbon) with a fresh Windows 10 install. The external drive (4TB ssd) works on other machines. The drive is being successfully indexed, explorer just refuses to search it. Microsoft support have been useless - each time start from the beginning with a new rep who reinstalls Windows, and for a couple of days the search funtion works then - voila, it’s down again. I have disabled all updates and cant for the life of me find any possible cause for the error. I’ve spent three weeks unable to work without income because of this - any ideas much appreciated!!!

External Hard Drive

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Windows Explorer crashes whenever I open my external HDD or thumb drive in explorer..

So, I open up My Computer, open my F Drive and boom: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and must close". It is really annoying! I am fine everywhere else in explorer, but something just screws up when I try the external HDD (USB) or my thumb drive.

Can anyone help?

• Just to confirm, the device that is not working properly is a external DVD optical drive?
• Were there any recent changes or updates installed on your computer?
• Have you tried to plug the external drive to a different port on your computer?
