Windows 10: Windows Feature update 1903 - Error 0x80070005 and others, A long story with a happy ending

The following is my tale of woes in chronological order when trying to update my Sony VAIO SVT1312B4E from Windows 10 1809 to 1903.


a) I was not offered the update, long after the update had successfully been installed on other PC's in the house with no problems and via normal Windows Update in Settings. An article suggested my drivers may need updating. Sure enough I found my Atheros Bluetooth driver and my Atheros Wifi driver both needed updating. I was only able to do the by visiting the Atheros site. Neither Windows update nor SONY's site helped here. Still no update offered. I then found that the check for updates got a bit further, but reported that my hard drive was a USB drive and I could not continue.
Microsoft helped this time with https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2778881/multiple-operations-fail-if-windows-8-is-improperly-identified-as-a-wi .
A registry tweak and at last I was offered the update via Windows Update.


b) After a Looooooong time ( several times over ) of downloading and installing the update, it finished each time by reporting failure with Error 0x80070005.
Many websites later, and having been frustrated by finding that I ( the administrator! ) did not have sufficient privileges to even run the fixes suggested, I resorted to prayer! You must reach that point of desperation when you finally give up on both your own wisdom and the collective wisdom of online contributors. God, or co-incidence if you prefer, put into my mind the thought that maybe even though my antivirus was disabled, perhaps it was interfering in some way. I uninstalled AVAST and tried again. Hallelujah! My laptop upgraded to 1903! I re-installed AVAST afterwards.


c) I tidied up all the previous installation failure downloads ( 40Gb of them ! ), and then, happy with my shiny new operating system safely intact on my C drive, I decided to take a partition backup so I would not have to jump through all these hoops again. I use Macrium Reflect, and have done so happily for many years.
Upon attempting to make an image of my hard drive partition, Macrium failed with an error code 9. Again hours of wondering what evil the latest update had wreaked on my partitions, when I found Macrium knew of the issue and it had been fixed in updated versions. Whew! I now have everything as it should be, but I couldn't have got there without help from this and other forums ( fora ? ). Thanks to all contributors.
