windows firewall will not stay disabled

I allowed my win10 home 64bit to update to 1703 last week. I hesitate to allow updates as MS insists on removing customizations, changes many user settings, and activates many services I don't want running.

since allowing the update, windows firewall was turned on, I can go into services and disable it (takes several attempts) and stop the service. within 2 hours I start having internet connectivity issues, I look in services and windows firewall has been turned on and its setting back to automatic.

I've been through 6+ tutorials from here with no luck. the windows firewall has always been more than problematic since I have installed windows 10, but this failure to remain disabled is causing numerous problems.

I'm on Home 1703 64bit, running Avast Internet Security, no other av or security software.

I've tried uninstalling avast, and the windows firewall will block most internet connections, reset windows firewall and everything is blocked including my network. disable windows firewall and all is fine. reinstall avast and all is good too. give it a couple hours and windows will change the firewall to automatic and start it, then all the problems reappear.

is there a way to keep windows firewall off permanently or uninstall it?

    thanks in advance

    :)

  2. will not stay in sleep mode after Windows 10 Version 1511 upgrade

    Hi Harkanwar,

It is the Windows firewall with Win10 1511 that does not allow sleep.

When I turned off Windows Defender the HP Pavilion desktop would not stay asleep.

However when I turned off windows firewall it stayed asleep.

I turned the firewall back on and disabled the notify me when a new app is blocked.

With that disabled is stays asleep.

Is there a serious downside from not being notified when a new app is blocked?

Again this is a Win 10 v 1511 problem this PC did not have a problem before the update.

Thanks for pointing me to the right place.

  3. Adaptive Brightness will not stay disabled permanently

I'm using an ASUS laptop with Windows 10. With adaptive brightness turned on, the screen is always incredibly dim, even when I manually set the brightness to the highest possible setting. Anything lower than the highest setting is practically illegible.

When I turn adaptive brightness off, everything is great. I can manually set it to very bright or very dim as needed.

The problem is that every single time I restart my computer, adaptive brightness is re-enabled, and I have to navigate through the Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Display > Adaptive Brightness menus in order to be
able to actually see my screen again.

I want a way to disable this feature permanently. If there's a way to completely remove the adaptive brightness option from my computer, even better. This "feature" has caused nothing but frustration.

  4. windows firewall will not stay disabled

Disabling Windows Firewall disables Windows Updates (store and other). It is an essential service, so it starts, even when disabled. Disabling "Base Filtering Engine" will disable WF, but you will not be able to install Avast.

You could try installing Windows Firewall Control or 3rd party firewall to take control over WF, but I guess you prefer to use the one included within Avast, in that case contact Avast support for assistance.

    that was quick, thanks

I know if the firewall is disabled updates will not install, and turning on the firewall will allow the updates. I prefer to have control of the process, as ms decides to wipe out many customizations and settings, and re-enables things like homegroup onedrive cortana etc. for me its a big pain and time consuming to put everything back, and restore connectivity.

the windows firewall has been nothing but problems for me since I did a clean install of windows 10, it just decides after a while to start blocking the internet, outlook, and sometimes my home network.

what I'm looking for is a permanent way to keep control of the windows firewall.

it looks like there is no solution to this. the windows firewall has activated it self from a disabled setting 6 times this morning already. each time creates havoc with the internet, email, and my network. all 3 of my pc's have the exact same problem on the same version, 1703. the latest from what I read is even worse with Home, cortana, firewall and Store becoming permanently enabled.

luckily I have backups, and can restore the previous version of windows10.

  7. You can cripple it, if you insist, removing this reg entry or denying permissions should make it unable to start.

Code: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy[/quote] But you will have to download and install updates manually, not sure about other issues.

If Avast can't help you with this problem what you might try is if you can disable the Avast firewall then use Comodo firewall, which to me is the best firewall on the planet, then you should be able to also turn off the windows stock firewall and it should stay off.

Because it seems to me you are having a compatibility problem with the Avast firewall and the windows OS.
