If SFC /scannow does not find any errors do you still recommend I run the DISM command?
What information will the "crash dump test" from WHOCRASHED give us?

    Thanks

There are some basic preventative maintenance tests that you can run on a regular basis. They are the scannow, restorehealth, and scan. They let you know if there are or are not problems with the operating system or drive files. If you find problems there are additional steps that you can make.
For whocrashed the software has a feature to create a dump and then process the dump. This will indicate whether dumps are or are not being created. Then when the DM log collector has collected all of the logs we can again see what was and was not done.
These are simple methods to check for problems in the computer environment.

When using the reliability control panel click on each date that displays a red circle with a white x and view the problems. Going forward when you have hangs or freezes use the reliability control panel to see if you can find information about the problems that you are experiencing.

Whocrashed has confirmed that the computer is capable of producing dump files.

There are methods to unintentionally delete dump files.

In the left lower corner search type: disk and click on disk cleanup > view the boxes that have checks > un-check system error memory dump files
If you use Ccleaner make sure windows > system > memory dumps is un-checked

Please post the result of step 4 in post #41
And post a current image of startup and recovery settings that were used during the whocrashed dump.
Uncheck automatic restart so that you have time to view the bsod window. Sometimes when using Windows driver verifier the malfunctioning driver is displayed in the form *.sys. If you see a misbehaving driver displayed after the stop code, typically driver verifier detected violation, please post the misbehaving driver into the thread.

Have you read the information on using Windows driver verifier?
Have you made a brand new restore point?
Have you made a backup image of the drive?
Do you know the 3 methods to turn off Windows driver verifier?

  5. I recently was introduced to this reliability control panel...I have been keeping an eye on it but have not been able to discover anything of note yet.

I am not using ccleaner. The other two settings were already set as you suggested.
They were in the text file in my last post.
    windows freeze DELL XPS15 [IMG]
I will start running driver verifier and see if it will generate any useful information.

The whocrashed results displayed that you created a manual crash on 8/30/2017.
What were the keyboard steps that you made to create the crash?

On Wed 8/30/2017 7:41:41 PM your computer crashed
    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\083017-8234-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: i8042prt.sys (i8042prt+0x9E7A)
    Bugcheck code: 0xE2 (0x0, 0x0, 0x0, 0x0)
    Error: MANUALLY_INITIATED_CRASH
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\i8042prt.sys
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: i8042 Port Driver
Bug check description: This indicates that the user deliberately initiated a crash dump from either the kernel debugger or the keyboard.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system that cannot be identified at this time.

Once I have turned on Driver Verifier do I need to be actively using the computer (using/opening different programs, browsing the web, etc) for it do what it does, or can I just have the computer on and idle?

    Thanks

In general when using Windows driver verifier it should either find or not find a misbehaving driver:
    1) if it detects a misbehaving driver it should produce a BSOD and continuously display this window (automatic restart un-checked)
    2) if it does not detect a misbehaving driver it should display whatever window was open when you left the computer

Typically you will be busy when you first turn it on as this is the first time it is used to detect misbehaving drivers. Then over time the computer environment will change depending upon which applications are in use.

I have a Event Viewer message about the same device (i8042prt.sys) on one of my Dell systems.

I have the impression it is referring to a PS/2 type port which I do not think I have. Maybe some driver or Bios update is stirring this up. But just guessing since I have not yet tracked down the origin of the error message. I will be doing that the rest of the day.

My Windbg shows the same cause. I don't remember, but you are not updating your system since you show 14393 build?

You seem to have some older drivers. Maybe check the files and see if the properties shows who wrote it, if you do not know what it is. Older files are suspicious but not necessarily bad.

  12. I am not purposefully holding updates from occurring. In my reliability monitor I am getting the attached problems related to updates. Do you have any idea why the problems are occurring? And when I check for updates in Settings Windows tells me everything is up to date (attached)

    windows freeze DELL XPS15

It may or may not be possible to upgrade from windows 1607 to 1703.
Most computers by this time have had automatic updates.
If those automatic updates failed there would be a message displaying the failure.

Please turn off windows driver verifer: open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    verifier /reset

    Perform the following steps:
    1) find a flash drive that you can format
    2) create a bootable windows 10 iso
    Download Windows 10
    3) perform an in place upgrade repair using the technique in this link:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
    4) This should allow you to save files and applications and perform an upgrade to windows 10 version 1703.
    5) If it fails you will want to view the Panther logs. These logs by default are often hidden. They may already exist on you computer now.
You can check for these logs looking for any of these:

    C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther
    C:\Windows\Panther
    setuperr.log
    setupact.log
    Setupmem.dmp ...........$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupmem.dmp
    setupapi.dev.log ..........$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log
    BlueBox.log
    $Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback*.evtx

    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther
    C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback

It can take a lot of time to decode or decipher the Panther logs.
So hopefully your upgrade works smoothly.

Currently I have a 2nd computer that has failed to upgrade. The first time there was no automatic windows posting that indicated the problem. It took a lot of time to decode the logs. The second computer has a similar problem as the automatic update displayed the failure problem. So you can attempt the upgrade and if it fails then troubleshoot.

If you have not already done so please:
    1) create a brand new restore point
    2) back up all files to another drive or to the cloud
    3) use Macrium to make a backup image.
Macrium Software | Your Image is Everything
    4) place the Macrium image onto another drive or into the cloud.

Have you checked the drivers I gave you. I know for a fact that RTKVHD64.sys Mon Oct 5 07:51:25 2015 is out of date for your system. Downlload the driver from Dell and update it.

And the Truecrypt one really bothers me. If you are still using that security software, update it. If you are not, you need to stop that driver from starting.

This thing, tap0901.sys, may have something to do with Open VPN

The other two seem to relate to an accelerometer sensor.

  15. Is there any reason I could not use the built in Windows System Image Backup instead of Macrium?

    Thanks
