Windows 10: windows freeze DELL XPS15

Both backup images will work provided you have a menu option to use a backup image.
If you don't have this option the Macrium method offers some additional fail safe methods.

Windows update seems to have gone through per your instructions (attached).
What might cause updates to not install like that? How do I prevent that from happening in the future?

 

What is the best way to track down the updated version of this driver? I don't see anything listed under that name on the dell support site.

Windows upgrade and update failures are multifactorial. After a failure typically there is a display that there was a failure and then you would need to troubleshoot a KB# and error code.
The driver displayed above is the Realtek high definition audio driver and should be available on the Dell website for your computer's configuration and operating system.
When you need drivers the best source is the computer manufacturer's web site. Second best is the component manufacturer's website. For realtek: Realtek
For each component manufacturer driver the computer manufacturer may make some modification so in general the computer manufacturer is most often the best source of drivers.

 

When I go to device manager under SOUND CONTROLERS > REALTEC AUDIO the driver date / version is 8/23/2016 / 6.0.1.7917. Saltgrass is saying that the driver is from 2015 (post #53). Are we both looking at the same driver?

Is there a good way to list all of my drivers and their version dates?

This driver is in the Audio section for your system. It has a release date of July 2017 and is version 6.0.1.8142. I don't remember where I got the info about your system except for the dump file. The audio drivers are updated fairly often so check what you show for the Realtek driver on your system.

 

As I said, update the driver.. may not help but won't hurt.

 

Windows continues to have problems with its auto update. The attached images is from the Reliability History.





Any thought on how I can fix this problem?

Hi again,
I am still getting the same random freeze in windows and am wondering if anyone has any other ideas about what could be causing this.

I updated the audio driver per the last suggestion.

Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed that I get one freeze for about every 7 hours of computer use. The freeze will happen, for example, when I am using chrome and chrome will continue to respond - if I mouse over things on a web page they will animate, and I can open and close tabs, but I can not access new web pages (it is like my internet connection is not working). When this happens and I try to press WINDOWS KEY+X nothing happens, CTRL+SHIFT+ESC nothing happens.

In the prior post you show an error which seems to be related to Windows Defender. If that is the case, I have never had a problem with Windows Defender having problems or causing problems. I am attaching specifics on my current version so you can check what you have. Any time you manually check for updates you should see the Defender update being downloaded or installed in some manner.

As far as the other situation, you say it only happens with Chrome. If you reboot your system and do not open Chrome, the system works fine? I will check your files and report back if I see anything definite.

 

Here is what I currently am running:

Chrome is not always running when the freeze happens. If I said that earlier I misspoke. It happens at random times.

There was not a recent dump file in your last file list, any chance of getting one? I can't do much with all those text files but I did check for a problem device listed and there was none show.
