Windows 10: Windows KB4566782 Cumulative Update Error 0x800f081f

Sorry for the long post, I have tried to provide as many details as possible. Quick note that I have already tried the standard Windows Update repair guides. Currently on 10 Home 20H2.19042.388.

The problem initially started with KB4568831 last month. I am on the slow ring/beta channel for WIP and before it was publicly released, I was experiencing a different error 0x8024200D (WU_E_UH_NEEDANOTHERDOWNLOAD). Looks like others also had a similar issue, because the update would run in a constant download-install-download loop and take up a lot of CPU unless it was paused.

Following the standard SFC, DISM-1-2-3, delete SoftwareDistribution/catroot2, check services, run troubleshooters, scripts and manual catalog install, I gave up and just instead waited for Microsoft to release a patch. Everything but installing the actual update came back clean.

After that, the more recent KB4566782 appeared in my available updates, I downloaded it, and got the new error code which I think is related to CBS. Also worth noting here that the other update has completely disappeared from the failed update history being a cumulative update.

I checked CBS.log and there are a few errors at the bottom, first being "CSI <timestamp> (F) onecore\base\wcp\sil\ntsystem.cpp(3044): Error STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND" which seems to be where the problem starts. Above it are around 250 lines of "Exec: Warning - Manifest doesn't exist for..." but I don't know if this is related or intentional design and out of it all I get a CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING.

I also found this recent post about something similar, but uninstalling antivirus didn't do the trick, and trying to run an in-place upgrade told me that I can't keep any of my programs or files with Windows being installed in the wrong location (already checked program files in registry) or it being an older version. I created the Windows ISO yesterday.

It isn't affecting the functionality of my machine, but I am also doubtful that future updates will install. My current plan is to keep going without the updates until security becomes an issue and I will likely have to do a fresh start at some point. It pains me when I have 300+ programs and quite a few more portable binaries for software dev. Something fun for another weekend I guess :/

KB4566782 Update Loop

My laptop is running Windows 10 2004 OS build 19041.388 and windows update decides to automatically install cumulative update KB4566782 (build 19041.450). The installation will fail (0x800f081f) during updating Windows and Windows update automatically retry
to install it until my laptop's battery dies.

How get out of this update loop?

I am getting consistent errors trying to run windows update:

This is on a brand new pc.

I have tried the troubleshooter but no success.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!
