Windows 10: Windows license transfer

Hi,


My current PC is having multiple problems and I will be forced to get a new motherboard and cpu, so I am wondering whether I'll still be able to use my current Windows 10 license after formatting my current drive.


I've looked at many sources online especially at the article on groovypost below but I am still confused as to the transferability of my license.

When accessing the Activation tab in Update & Security, I see the following: "Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account"


From what I understand, that would mean that I wont be able to transfer my license since I don't have a Windows 10 product key.


But, I've also read that a Windows 7 product key which I have could also be used to upgrade to Windows 10.


Will I be able to transfer the license?

i bought the license. My laptop was originally loaded with win 7 and was upgraded free couple of months.

in this case, if i understand you correctly, i can transfer with below steps. Right.?

let me buy my new laptop and try below.

and to my question do you have an update.

does OS upgrades if my activation key is changed.

Windows 10 license transfer

If its a retail license, yes, you can transfer it. Learn more about transferring the license:

Windows 10 license transfer

There is no actual deactivation method.

You can only transfer the license if its a retail license. If it came with the laptop you can't transfer it.

You can first uninstall the key.

Open Start, type: cmd

Right click CMD

Click Run as administrator

At the command prompt, type:

slmgr -upk

Hit Enter

Next, proceed to upgrade the new laptop:

You might need to reactivate by chat support since the license was previously in use.
