Windows Live Mail opens but won't load

I upgraded from Windows 7 Home to Windows 10 today. It took HOURS! I was assured that I would be able to use my Windows Live Mail but I can't. The program itself opens but there is nothing loaded in it. I went to C drive/Users/Name/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Live Mail and everything is there. I tried to open one an email from there but it wouldn't work. I have an extensive library of folders and saved data and i need to be able to access it. I backed in all up on my external prior to doing the upgrade, but I need Windows Live Mail to function.

So far, I don't like Windows 10. I loved my Windows 7. *cry

Can anyone help me solve this email dilemma?

    :)

windows 10 windows live mail 2011 will not load

Upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Windows Live Mail 2011 will not load correctly and when it does I can't open new e-mails, also I can't find my contacts any more. Outlook 2013 was down loaded for a trial and I activated Outlook and all my e-mails
open fine, and my contacts are all there. My question is this. Is Windows Live Mail 2011 supported by Windows 10.

I can't help with your Live Mail but what i did was to down load OE Classic and it has worked really well for me. You can get it here, OE Classic Download

I finally got the bright idea to try running WLM in compatibility mode for Windows 7. However, that tab is a little different now (or at least I never noticed it before) that there is a compatibility troubleshooter on top. I ran that and at the end it wanted to know if I wanted to use settings recommended and I clicked yes. Walla!!! My Windows Live Mail program immediately began to fill with all my lovely folders, etc. I'm assume that it will continue, now, to function.

  6. Hi welcome to 10 forum.
Did you try setting your mail up in the Windows 10 Mail App.
As once you have it should open and work ok in that,
I have my MSN, Gmail, Yahoo and AOL all set up in there and they work ok
Also once you get used to 10 you wont want to go back to any other OS

You will likely soon need to change the Account type to IMAP as WLM will no longer support the DeltaSync protocol soon (Hotmail /Outlook Account type) , for may users .M$ said they are disabling/upgrading it to EAS Protocol which LiveMail doesn't support ( there is a patch but it screwed WLM up for me) on or after June 30th.

Personally I switched all account to IMAP and so far all if fine except Calendar

Calendar in WLM will no longer Sync either , but win10 has a built in One along side the Free Mail App.

Thank you for your response. I don't like the Windows 10 Mail App AT ALL, but according to what Kbird says, maybe I'm going to have to make a change after all.

Great! Here I thought I was in the clear. First I want to ask a question. If for some reason I can not use WLM, is there any way I would still be able to get into all the emails I have stored in a very extensive filing system or are they all going to be dead to me? If so, that would be kinda disastrous to me and I'm going to have to start going through things, copying and pasting to Open Office or something and setting up files.

Next, is there a simple set of instructions somewhere for changing to IMAP?

I switched WLM to IMAP about a month ago and I have had no problems accessing Hotmail/Outlook etc. , don't think it is quite as fast but I still prefer it to Win10 Mail , though I set it up to as a backup to WLM too.

You will still be able to access Storage Folders from WLM on that one computer , but if it dies or you buy a new computer ,Storage Folder will no longer sync to the new computer. You need to move ALL Email Folders from the Storage Folders back into the Main Accounts by making new Folders under the Main Account and then moving (drag and drop) the Messages into the New folders. WLM does not allow Folder Drag and Drop it seems so you need to make new folder and then move the messages (use select all) from the Storage Folders to the Newly created Folder.

If you use OneDrive you also need to make sure you have less than 5GB in the Account by month end or they will make it read only.

There is more info in this posting here on the Storage folders issue...scroll down

I still use WLM 2012 and will continue until it quits syncing. I did a clean install of Windows 10 14393 this past Saturday and I reinstalled WLM 2012. Upon initial start it did not sync mail, calendar or contacts. I have a copy of the patch that was released some months ago that has caused many problems for users and ran it in repair mode for WLM 2012 and everything syncs now. I know that MS says this will end, but so far everything is good.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I have tons of storage folders and much of the information in them is very important to me so I don't want to lose it.

My ISP accessed my computer remotely today and changed my Windows Live Mail to an IMAP account for me. I didn't realize that I was going to lose all the mail in my inbox (including my webmail) when he switched me to IMAP. I wish I had known that so I could somehow have savde the important emails I had in my inbox. Now I'm just out.

I already had all these folders set up under my POP3 account and they are still there. Are you saying that I have to add these same NEW folders under the IMAP account and then transfer the mail from the POP3 storage folders to the new folders created under the IMAP account?

It didn't look to me like you could even create folders in the new Windows 10 Mail account. Is that right or wrong?

Are all my contacts from the POP3 going to remain in place and safe?

Windows Live Mail opens but won't load

What I actually meant by this is if I can't use Windows Live Mail at all, even as IMAP, then is there some source by which I can still have access to all those emails in all those storage folders?

Your ISP deleted the Hotmail Account from WLM before checking that IMAP was working properly ? or you had a chance to save your emails ? They probably assumed all the email was on Outlook and would just sync back up , but that is not the case if you use Storage Folders. You need to move the messages out of the storage folders and back into the Main account so they will sync to IMAP Account. IMAP lets you use folders, POP3 does not.

I wonder if you can open a Hotmail sync'd account ( DeltaSync) again and it will find you locally stored Emails so you can rescue them?
You don't need to delete the IMAP account to do that , I ran them side by side until I was sure I had moved my stored email over.

Your Contacts should all be on Outlook.com (webmail) and safe , and they should sync back up as long as you are signed in , in WLM.

IMAP is EASY to setup for all your Accounts , have a look at this Post by SlartyBart and Myself.

New Outlook.com and Windows Essentials Live Mail (WLM)

There is likely someone smart person here who knows which folder all those emails are stored in , though I am unsure if you can access them again in Mail etc. except as .eml files.

If you save the Windows Live Mail folder from here C:\Users\yourcomputername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\ then you can easily replace your accounts, folder incl storage folders when you install the program on a new computer or reinstall.
Just open WLMail to create the folder then navigate to the above link on your computer & delete the newly created folder & replace it with the saved version, when you next open Live mail you'll have to sign into all your email accounts but your emails will be there - I save this folder regularly.
If you check the folder the old account may still be there with your missing emails.
