Windows 10: Windows Media Player - help or replace

Okay, I know windows media player is no longer supported. I've had this issue for a while.

I plug my phone (andriod, motorola) into my PC and windows media player pops up. On the right side of the window it has a picture of an ipod or something, with a yellow arrow and the words connect a device, and below that a 'progress bar' which doesn't seem to fill.

Below that is a sync list, drag here to sync. I can drag stuff over there but it never sinks. There is a 'start sync' button above the 'connect a device' but it is greyed out.

So, what am I doing wrong, or what product should I replace this with?

Note, I have a bunch of music from old CDs I converted, various free downloads, it's possible a few youtube videos converted to MP3s etc. I don't have a cloud music service. I want to be able to move those files over to my phone.

and from the last link is the same error where you can just disable it too =)

 

Faulty Windows Media Player

Windows Mesdis Player developed a fault (Played jerky an missed bits) so I down loaded Media Player 10.

It's no better. Any suggestions (I run Windows 98)
