Windows 10: Windows Media Player ignores an inserted DVD

I bought an Italian language teaching aid book ("Caccia ai tesori") and with it comes a disk with mp3 and video files to play on my Windows 10 laptop.


Windows Media Player presumably plays DVDs (at least it used to in earlier versions) but is ignoring the DVD drive. There is nothing wrong with the drive (I've tested it) so must be the software and/or disk.


The disk contains three folders

1. AUDIO_TS (empty)
2. COMPRENSIONE ORALE (has a set of mp3 tracks which play if you copy them into a folder on C drive)
3. VIDEO_TS (which has sets of files all with the extension ".BUP", ".IFO" or ".VOB")

Each video has a set of three files in the format "VTS_nn_n.extension" where extension is each of the three above. There are also three files named "VIDEO_TS.extension" where extension is again one of the three files.


None of these files are recognised, and in fact Windows Media Player doesn't even seem to accept anything from the DVD/CD reader drive.


Has anyone got any idea what is going on here. The instructions (in italian) say something like "open Windows Media, insert disk and play" !!


I may add it plays faultlessly on an Apple iMac...


I note that the drop down menu on this post submit page (windows topics) has only "Windows DVD PLayer" is this different to the Windows Media Player? And where would I get the former if different?

I suggest you to run Windows Media Player DVD troubleshooter.

Steps:

• Press Windows key, type troubleshooting
  and select it.
• Click on View all in the left pane.
• Click onWindows Media Player DVD and follow the onscreen instructions.

Windows Media Player doesnt recognize there is a DVD in the player, and wont play it. Windows 10.
