    If you change to a different edition, such as the Educational edition, even if you upgraded first it will still require a new key. The upgrade activation is only valid with the same edition you have installed, or upgraded.

    So, for example. If you upgraded your Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10, you would have Windows 10 Home. If you wipe the drive and re-install Windows 10 home (same edition... be careful not to confuse single language with multiple language) then it will continue to be activated.

    If, however you upgraded your Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home, then wiped and installed Windows 10 Educational, it will NOT activate and you will need a new key because Educational is a different SKU.

    In that case and if you did what Mystere posted above, give it a day or two of trying to activate.

    The MS activation servers have been under heavy load, and not always able to activate.

    I have the same problem.

    I upgraded my 8.1 pro which worked fine.
    The fresh install there after refuses to activate, MS support (line 1) were unable to help, it has been escalated to line two who are due to call me tomorrow.

    I'll let you know how it goes.

    Hello, I am back on Windows 10 Pro activated. I was wondering if there is a to factory reset Windows 10. I want to start from scratch, because some of the settings carried out to Windows 10.

    A reset, put copy of Windows 10 on system but with nothing else, no saved settings or installed software like you bought a Win 10 disc and installed it.

    Jamie, what error did you get before? There are two issues here, one with the server not responding, or the other where the product key is blocked.

    On the upgrade it activated fine, on the fresh install it gave me the product key was blocked error.

    On log in this morning it has activated.
