Windows 10: Windows Not Activating After Upgrades

Previously, I bought Windows 8.1 as a physical copy and ran it until Windows 10 was released. I upgraded to Windows 10 Home Edition and reinstalled that copy a few times on the machine.

Just today, however, it said that my copy of Windows wasn't activated, so I took out my Windows 8.1 box again and typed in my key and it activated.

Meanwhile, I was trying to figure out how to upgrade from my Windows 10 Home to Pro edition so I can use remote desktop. I checked around and it took me to this site Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro microsoft.com

I clicked the button on the site thinking that I'd have to pay for a fee to upgrade to Pro, and it took me to the Microsoft store where it just automatically upgraded my copy of Windows, however when I checked again, it says that my license of Windows was no longer activated and it had upgraded me to Windows 10 Enterprise when I only clicked on the button to upgrade me to Pro. My Windows 8.1 license didn't work this time when I keyed it in.


So can I get some help with this? I'm super confused as to everything that just happened in the last 3-4 hours. In the end, I have a Windows license that I paid for and I would like to have my Windows activated so I can change Personalization and other things.

Activating Windows 10 after upgrade

From Why can't I activate Windows?

If you upgraded to Windows 10 for free and ended up in a non-activated state, try following these steps:

• Go to Start
  
  , then select Settings > Update & security > Activation.
• Select Go to Store, and check to see if a valid license is available for your device. If a license isn't available, you'll need to buy Windows from the Store.

or you could hack it with a crack but please note this is always risky and you don't know what's in the hack

 

Can't upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Pro

I suggest you to download and create an installation media for Windows 10 Pro form the link provided below:

Download Windows 10

After the installation media is created, suggest you to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro from the installation media. When the upgrade asks for product key, enter the product key purchased for Windows 10 Pro. If it does not accept, suggest you to skip the activation
step. After the Operating System is installed, suggest you to activate by phone by following the steps below:

• Press “Windows key + R” and type “slui 4” and press Enter.
• Select the Region from the list and click Next.
• Call the Toll-Free number provided on top and can activate via phone.
