I feel your pain. I had to recover from a Reflect backup. All is fine now I've blocked the offending update which in theory I shouldn't have received.

Not sure where MS is at with that kb, but I’m quite sure they would not release it again unless it was able to install. I noticed you two use 3rd party AV. Do you know about the fact that an AV has to be compatible for that kb? It needs to be able to change certain Registry keys in order for the kb to install successfully. More about that in this thread:

    Cumulative Update KB4056892 Windows 10 v1709 Build 16299.192 - Windows 10 Forums

Also, the term “bricked” means to render a device absolutely useless. e.g. A BIOS flash or a firmware update gone bad, therefore not able to install anything thereafter rendering it useless. Attempting to install the kb may have borked or broke your system, but not bricked it. My thoughts is that it frightens people when they see that term is all.

All my PCs use Defender now. I'll update my signature! I guess my PC wasn't bricked by your definition but Auto Repair failed to run and the Macrium Reflect boot repair tool didn't work.

    @Tony K
My PC isn't bricked - it just refuses to boot after KB4056892 is installed.

Updating Windows Defender applies the necessary Registry fix, by the way, paving the way for KB4056892 to install,

Restored it to an earlier build (16299.19)) via Macrium and it worked perfectly until I allowed KB4056892 to install, when the whole cycle starts again. So, the version of KB4056892 that's currently available still stops some AMD PCs from booting.

I did allow some updates through, so presently the PC is at OS Build 16299.125. I've made another image of that and have set
Set Feature update delay 365 days
    Quality update delay 30 days
    Network METERED

    That'll stop it! *Mad

That should work - else use the method in this Tutorial which I've used to block the single offending update Hide or Show Windows Updates in Windows 10

Understandably tension are high, especially with this CPU fiasco going on. Then updating fiascos. Believe me, I'm only attempting to be helpful by pointing out some possibilities is all. If the kb doesn't install on some AMDs, that's the first I've heard of it. Happy that you pointed that out.

Also, I've heard that Macrium Reflect was having issues as well. Don't use it so can't help there.

So far as the term brick; It actually was introduced by means of unlocking cell phones with firmware, for here in the U.S. our phones were locked. When a firmware hack went bad it rendered the phone useless, so therefore called a brick. So the term is rather scary here.

I wasn't suggesting that you weren't trying to help - the whole purpose of this thread, in my mind is to discuss the fact that some PCs with AMD processors, are failing to boot after the application of KB4056892, which itself is supposed to help mitigate the effects of critical vulnerabilities of both Intel and AMD processors. So as far as AMD is concerned, the cure is worse than the disease!

Regarding Macrium Reflect: I'm using Free Edition (64 Bit) version 5.2 which is an old version that works. I've imaged and restored several PCs both Intel and AMD, since Windows 7 days. It ain't broke, and I ain't fixing it!

Regarding the term "brick" -point taken but I did say "My PC isn't bricked - it just refuses to boot after KB4056892 is installed"
As you imply, this whole episode is frustrating us all especially as it's not entirely clear whom to blame!

This MS article may be worth keeping an eye on.

I thought Microsoft had pulled KB4056892 from my PC, but noticed this morning that it's wanting to install on my computer. I've tried this update about 15 times now and it won't install. Gets to 99% and will stop.
I am running an AMD computer. Just wondering if I should download KB407 3290 and try to install on my computer. My computer is not an older AMD. I've had this machine 4 Yrs? Would it be OK to try to install since the KB4056892 is waiting for me to install it?

It's probably wanting to install KB4056892 because it's already downloaded it.

I would try running the Windows Update Mini Tool,

Use it to block KB4056892 , THEN run the manual installation of KB4073290

Here is what I did this very afternoon I didn't need to use the Mini Tool because I'd previously restored Windows to an earlier version so i KNEW nothing was "lurking"

Assuming it works OK, after that, go and Clean the System files from your C: Drive which should hopefully get rid of part-installed updates. Option 1, Item 5 in this thread
