Thanks! I downloaded the ISO and ran the install... it crashed on 35%. It’s been on 35% for 2 hours.

If you can get your PC booting again:

I note previously you did a clean boot. However I can't see a comment as to whether having done that you were still experiencing problems.

Clearly it would be little use trying a major upgrade if your CPU were busy because of this problem.

Please confirm if there is no error reporting after a clean boot and that your CPU use is minimal.

Did you run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter I mentioned earlier?

Before attempting the upgrade repair again please
    - uninstall any 3rd party security software
    - disconnect any unnecessary peripherals esp. wireless
    - make sure you have noting modifying the GUI that might conflict
    - check you have more than 20Gb free on C:

Then try the in-place upgrade repair install then. (I.e. you're logged in, and then run setup.exe) - please confirm that's how you are doing this.

If still problems please post a screenshot of your partitions using Minitool Partition Wizard (free) expanding columns as necessary to make sure all text is visible.

  3. Successfully repaired windows but unfortunately the problem still persists.

I installed Minitool Partition Wizard from MiniTool Partition Wizard | Best partition magic alternative for Windows PC and Server but the program won't open. It says 'Sorry, Minitool Partition Wizard has crashed' every time. I've tried reinstalling but no joy.

Windows Problem Reporting completely crashing PC

Previously I asked you to have a look at your Reliability History.
E.g. type 'Reli' in Cortana's search box and click Reliability History.
There should be some red x's - click on those and look at the reports. As you have WER's there should be some.

Your problem with Minitool suggests some significant problem exists.

I understand you have done an in-place upgrade repair install. That replaces all Windows files and undoes updates - however your basic problem must be related to something installed, or your user profile.

Previously I asked you if you still experienced this problem after a clean boot. Does it occur if you do a clean boot?

If you can't access Reliabilty History, try Appcrashview (free) by Nirsofer. Post a screenshot of what it shows, unless there's nothing.

    Thanks.

  5. Screenshot of reliability history below. The crash happened around 20:00 on the 28th.

I did a clean boot and didn't experience the problem, however it seems to happen sporadically. It may be a coincidence.

Thanks for all your help with this!

Thanks. If it doesn't occur after a clean boot, then as one might expect, the most likely cause is something installed.

One approach would be to disable startups, see if the problem occurs, and if not, then progressively enable startups it recurs- process of elimination.

Another approach - trying to find the cause of the reports:
Look at your Reliability History and the Application and Miscellaneous failures.
Click on the red x's. Is there anything that
    a. Occurs at the time when you have problems
    b. Occurs repeatedly?

Try running Appcrashview and post a screenshot.

    Previously you mentioned
    dipawaymode.exe stopped working
    aaHMSvc.exe stopped working
    Cubase stopped working

    - try uninstalling anything related to such crashes and reports, including these.

Note: compared to earlier, hopefully some of the things you mentioned were resolved by the in-place upgrade repair, although the WER problem is of course not.

  7. I don't think so! Please let me know if I'm missing something but take yesterday for example: if you look at the screenshot in my previous post there were no 'critical events' around 20:00 - the time of the crash. I shut down windows manually at 20:16 but the only critical event before that was when Chrome stopped working at 12:44.

What sort of crash? A freeze? Lots of WER's? Please advise what you are now experiencing.

Freezes don't produce event logs. If you're saying there is no report corresponding to whatever occurred, and there is no crash after a clean boot, then I suggest you proceed with a process of elimination.

That's assuming whatever problem it is you are now experiencing is related to an installed program.

  9. You will have to take the long road and do a clean boot and use your computer in clean boot state for few days to see issue resolves if it does then you will need to enable only few of the startup programs and services and use your computer like this for few days. Keep a note of the startup programs and services you have enabled and when the issue comes back you will know one of the startup programs or services causing the issue.

Can you also scan for malware infection.

    Malwarebytes' scanner
If this program is already installed: Skip the installation and run only the scan!
Download and install: Please download Malwarebytes' scanner to your desktop.

    • Double-click mb3-setup-consumer-3.x.x.xxxx and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • Click Finish.
    • On the Dashboard, click the 'Check for Updates' button.
    • After the update completes, click the 'Scan Now' button.
    • A Threat Scan will begin. Please allow it to progress through the scanning process.
    • When the scan is complete, if there have been detections, click Quarantines Selected button to allow the program to clean what was detected.
    • In most cases, a restart will be required.
    • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.

How to get logs: (Export log to save as txt)

    • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open Malwarebytes once more.
    • Click on the Reports tab > Scan Report. (if you have done more than one scan in the past, select the most recent that shows the Date and time of the scan just performed. Press View Report button.
    • Click 'Export'.
    • Click 'Text file (*.txt)'
    • In the Save File dialog box which appears, click on Desktop.
    • In the File name: box type a name for your scan log.
    • A message box named 'File Saved' should appear stating "Your file has been successfully exported".
    • Click Ok
    • Find the log on your Desktop and Attach that saved log to your next reply.

  10. Thanks! I did a Malwarebytes scan and no threats were detected. I'll take your advice and do the clean boot! I'll update the thread if I find anything.

    Thank you

  12. Hi! So I have finally figured it out! I've had no problems whatsoever since disabling 'Malwarebytes Service'.

However, since disabling nearly all my services, I'm unsure as to which ones I should reenable. My PC works fine so I'm not sure what all these extra services do. I've attached screenshots of all my services below. I'd be super grateful if you wouldn't mind having a look over them to see if there are any I should definitely reenable. Thank you!

Service processes are those system or application processes that do run as services.

These include system services like the Task Scheduler and the Print Spooler, but they also include non-system services like SQL Server, which is a database server service.

A service is an application or innate operating system component that provides services (capabilities) to the network, the local machine, or both.

Its up to you which services you want to enable these services belong to applications you have installed. For example do you want TeamViewer 11 service startup at boot time does the TeamViewer works if you set this service to manual if it does then configure service startup type manual.

I have program that will not work if the service belong to program is not already started so i set the service to automatic startup type i could also set it to manual and each time i want to run the program i can start its service manually.

You can open the Services manager by typing services.msc into Start Menu.

  14. DTSAudioSvc - to be able to listen to DTS over AC3, when supported, it is very light
Google Update Service (both) - to keep your browser updated to prevent malware
