  1. Windows Problem Reporting completely crashing PC

If I leave my PC for a while, whenever I come back to it the entire system is completely crashed. Mouse frozen, programs unresponsive. Occasionally it (barely) functions long enough for me to access task manager and I see many instances of 'Windows Problem Reporting' and my CPU is maxed out at 100%.

    Please help.

    Windows Explorer Crash

    Ran SFC and DISM:

    • SFC reported that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
    • DISM reported that the restore operation was completed successfully.

However, Windows Explorer is still crashing!

Windows Problem Reporting completely crashing PC

    Hi, suggest you try
    a. Safe Mode - check that's ok
    b. A clean boot - check that's ok.

Have a look at your event log and see what's being reported.. or perhaps your Reliability History (search for Reli) will show that- look for the red x's.

How long has this been happening?
Some idea of your PC's recent history would help. E.g. Have you installed some new programs.. received an update.. (look at your Update History).

What changes have you made to your system since it was working?
What is your Windows build (Windows key + R, winver)?

    Basic checks:
From an admin command prompt run
    sfc c: /scan
    and report the result
    Run
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and report the result

  5. Thanks for your help!

SFC /SCANNOW did not report any problems.
It seems to have begun around the time I installed the Fall Creators Update.
    Nothing logged in event log.

Reliability log has several critical events:
    dipawaymode.exe stopped working
    aaHMSvc.exe stopped working
    Cubase stopped working

On all the times when a critical event took place, a windows update also took place. Always a 'definition update for windows defender' but often other updates as well.

  7. chkdsk c: /scan returned no errors.

The Asus utilities automate my fans and that's it. However, the problem has occurred without these utilities crashing so that would suggest the problem is unrelated, wouldn't it?

I find it very difficult to troubleshoot the issue (I.e clean boot) because I can't figure out how to cause it. Sometimes I return to my PC after leaving it for a while and everything is fine. Other times and it's completely crashed.

Windows Problem Reporting completely crashing PC

Bottom line- if Windows is sound (think Safe Mode, clean boot) it's an installed application causing this. Otherwise, it's a hardware problem. If you've no specific report to go on, you're left with a process of elimination.

Note: some people who upgrade to the FCU find they need to downgrade their graphics driver. I'm just giving this as an example- I've not heard of someone reporting what you first described.

Others need to update their BIOS.

And it could be you have a program which needs updating for compatibility.

Try the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter (bottom left)

  9. I couldn’t locate the issue after doing a clean boot. But I did uninstall a ton of software... the problem still persists. These are some of the errors I’m getting in event logs:

Package Microsoft.Windows.Photos_2017.39101.16720.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe+App was terminated because it took too long to suspend.

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Client License Service (ClipSVC) service to connect.

    - does that mean you weren't experiencing any problems, or that you still had the same problem?

Those reports seem to be all universal app related apart from the 2nd.

While you could try re-registering all universal apps
Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials
I'm very much tempted to suggest you 'cut to the chase' and do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs and data and most settings. This could save a lot of time if it helps. You've said your build is the FCU (1709) so:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Installation Upgrade Tutorials
(You will need a 1709 iso - there's a download link in the tutorial).

This may or may not help: that repairs Windows and some registry keys. If the problem is an installed program, it won't help, in which case the key will be to identify what's giving rise to so many such reports.

If necessary, to gain control, you can try disabling error reporting:
    Download Winaero's free tweaker:

    (Otherwise it's a registry hack).

  12. Thanks! I've removed AI Suite altogether now. The problem still occurs.

I reinstalled all my windows apps using powershell and got a ton of errors. All relating to AppxManifest. E.g:

    Add-AppxPackage : Cannot find path 'C:\AppXManifest.xml' because it does not exist.At line:1 char:38+ ... | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.I ...+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ + CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (C:\AppXManifest.xml:String) [Add-AppxPackage], ItemNotFoundException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : PathNotFound,Microsoft.Windows.Appx.PackageManager.Commands.AddAppxPackageCommand

    and

Add-AppxPackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073D06, The package could not be installed because a higher
version of this package is already installed.
Windows cannot install package Microsoft.Services.Store.Engagement_10.0.1610.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe because it has
version 10.0.1610.0. A higher version 10.0.17112.0 of this package is already installed.
NOTE: For additional information, look for [ActivityId] 7f490b42-9202-000b-5c2c-497f0292d301 in the Event Log or use

    - see my previous post #8. I think you need to do an in-place upgrade repair install.

  14. Is there any difference if I 'do a repair install of Windows 10 with Media Creation Tool' instead? I tried to do the 'create installation media' option and it failed.
