  1. Windows Reset My PC has overwritten non system, data drives

On the weekend, I attempted to overclock my GPU. Seemed to be going ok, when I restarted, windows would not boot. It would start and hang indefinitely.

I checked online for solutions. The first thing I tried was clearing CMOS. Everything that I tried, I tried with the video card installed and with out it, using onboard graphics from CPU. I proceeded to attempt StartUp Repair, did not solve my issue. I attempted restore point and despite the fact that I made several restore point during the process of a fresh windows build just two months ago, this option was not available. The same goes for system image.

Finally, I decided to try Reset My PC option. It would get close to finishing and freeze. This happened again and again.

Finally, I recalled that two months ago with that fresh install, my M.2 nvme that had not worked with this motherboard previously all of a sudden worked, so I copied the system drive to the M.2 ssd and the other ssd was just sitting there. Finally, I got my system up and running and to my horror, Reset My PC had installed a non functional version of windows onto the system drive the m.2 drive, my 2TB HDD with all of my documents, video, audio and pictures and my 2TB HDD that was connected that served as my back up to the first Data drive.

Now, I have lost all of my pictures, videos, music, pictures of the last 15 years of my life because Microsoft can't resolve the issues with system recovery. These forums and the internet are littered with similar stories and when I contact Microsoft support...sorry not our problem.

    Is my data gone forever?

Why hasnt microsoft resolved these recovery option issues?

    :)

  3. Lost data from hard drive, what to do now?

Well, I'm sorry to hear that it's a WD My Passport that failed on you, @tomhenry ! *Frown Windows Reset My PC has overwritten non system, data drives :(
I'd recommend you to try using a different USB cable with it and see if that will help your system to detect it without it disconnecting.
I'd also suggest you to go to Disk Management and see how the drive is listed there. It won't hurt to check up on the health and SMART status of the HDD by running the QUICK and EXTENDED tests from the WD's Data LifeGuard Diagnostics. Here's a link to the available software: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=11ZOpD

Give these troubleshooting steps a try and keep us posted with the results!
