Windows 10: Windows Says Boot File is Missing | Error Code 0xc0000098

Getting this error code on boot. This happened after simply running Tails OS from a USB without making modifications to the disc Windows is on.

I attempted to follow this tutorial to restore the boot files from a USB loaded with Windows 10.

However, when I try to cd into C:\Windows\System32 I am notified that the drive is encrypted with BitLocker. I don’t have the encryption key to unlock it as this is a friend’s computer (who does not have the key) but does have the “BitLocker Recovery Key.”

Am I able to disable encryption on the drive from the command prompt using the recovery key?

Another happening I would like to mention is that I went to the command prompt again and it randomly had defaulted into X:\Windows\System32. I tried following the tutorial mentioned above but I’m not sure that X:\ is the drive that was used for storing the boot files or if it is C:\ (which is encrypted.) Please forgive my ignorance, I’ve been using Linux exclusively for a few years and I’m struggling to remember how Windows works.

The the 0xc0000098 error can appear due to a corrupted BCD (Boot Configuration Data) file. This can be due to a change in the hardware. There is also a possibility that Windows files or the hard drive was damaged on some cases. In this case, we suggest to boot
from windows 10 installation disc and kindly follow the steps provided by
Teemo Tang on this
