Windows 10: Windows Security - Controlled Folder access

Windows Defender Antivirus antimalware platform - Version 4.18.2001.10



The issues that is occurring is when I have controlled folder access turn on and I go into control panel - programs and features - uninstall a program, just being on that page and not selecting anything and even when having chrome open, a message pops up saying that protected folder access blocked.

App or progress blocked: explorer.exe

Protected folder E:\GOG galaxy\games\the witcher 3 wild hunt goty\

just loading up to the said folder causes it to occur.

just to note windows is installed on the C:\ drive and games installed on another.

also one for steam - games folder which contains just the desktop icons for the installed game.


when I was in the progress of saving a screenshot to the desktop C:\ the message about protected folder access blocked came up for that as well.


first i thought it might be the graphic drivers update nvidia 442.50, so I uninstalled it and went back to the previous version nvidia 442.19, of which i know there was no issue with that version, but issues still present.

also tried system restore to the day before, still issue persist.


The only things that updated before the issues stated to happen were updating to v4.18.2001.10 of windows security antimalware client, before that it was v4.18.1911.3.


* 2020-02 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64 was installed as well.


* security intelligence update ver 1.311.316.0 and 1.311.332.0 show up in reliability monitor page but they don't show up in view update history with windows update setting.

Windows Security - Controlled Folder Access - Recently Blocked App List

I thank you for your response. I know how to add and remove apps to and from the controlled folder access. My question is how to remove an app from the "Recently Blocked Apps" list. In Windows 1809 they made it easier to add apps to the controlled folder
access without having to navigate to the exe. They added a Recently Blocked Apps list you can select from. The steps for Windows 1809 are:

1. Open the Windows Security and click/tap on the Virus & threat protection icon.

2. Click/tap on the Manage ransomware protection link under the Ransomware protection section.

3. Click/tap on the Allow an app through Controlled folder access link.

4. Click/tap on Yes when prompted by UAC to approve.

5. Click/tap on Add an Allowed App (+) sign

6. Click or tap Recently Blocked Apps from the drop down menu. (NEW)

7. Click or tap on the (+) button for the app you want to add from the list. (NEW)

It is this Recently Blocked Folders List I am trying to edit to remove apps I have not authorized and that have been deleted from my PC and are still in this list. I know you can select an allowed app from the controlled folder access list and you will
see a REMOVE button, which in 1809 will put the app back in the Recently Blocked Apps list if it was there originally. But that same process does not work on the Blocked Apps list.

My question still remains:

How do you delete an app from the "Recently Blocked Apps" list in Windows Security for Windows 1809?

Controlled folder access Problem

I want to use ( Controlled folder access ) for my custom folders like system 32,
but want to remove the default folders like the desktop folder .
Found in :
windows defender > windows defender security center > virus & threat protection >
virus & threat protection settings > Controlled folder access :

Sometimes I cant save or edit things at the desktop with Controlled folder access On.
Yet if turned Off ; then I cant protect my custom folders.

Hows protecting the desktop more important than system 32 ?

Asking for advice to get around this by any means, to delete the default list, so only my custom folders remain in the control access list.
