    Windows Sizes When Using External Monitor


    Hey Gang,


    I am new to Windows. I came from Apple. Last time I use Windows was Windows Vista.


    My question is.


    I have a Dell Laptop and Dell External Monitor. Is it possible for Windows to remember your window sizes when switching from

    laptop display to external display. Anytime I disconnect, My windows are all out of order and I have to adjust my window sizes every single time I go from laptop to external display. Anyone run into this? Is there a fix? Third party program that can help me? Or is this just how it is?


    My Setup​


    Dell Laptop

    Inspiron 13 7375 2-in-1 running Windows 10 Home

    AMD Ryzen 7 2700U with Radeon Vega Mobile GFX , 12GB Memory, 256GB SSD


    External Monitor

    Dell - 32" LED Curved QHD FreeSync Monitor with HDR

    Hi,

    Please answer these questions to assist you better.

    • What is the make and model of your computer and external monitor?
    • Have you installed all pending Windows and driver updates?
    • Do you get any error message?

    I suggest you to install all pending Windows updates in your PC and also update Display drivers. Follow the steps below.

    Step 1: I would suggest you to check and install any latest Windows Updates available.

    • Go to Start and then Settings.
    • Click on Update and Recovery.
    • Check for updates under
      Windows Updates.
    • Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

    Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.



    I understand that you are facing issues with the display scaling on your external displays. We will certainly look into this for you.

    As you are using Vizio TV, you may have to try using custom resolution settings if the in-built settings do not provide the required settings.

    For better clarity, please let us know:

    • What is the version of Windows 10 that is currently installed on your computer? You can click on Search and type
      winver.
    • Are you aware of any recent changes to the system, such as updates, after which you are facing this issue?
    • What is the make and model of your computer?


    Meanwhile, I would suggest you to check the steps mentioned in the Workaround section in

    Windows scaling issues for high-DPI devices

    I would also suggest you to check the Display drivers. Please refer

    External Monitor with Quicken

    Hi Mark,

    It is possible that the display resolution automatically adjusts after connecting to an external monitor. For us to properly isolate this issue, we have some questions for you:

    • Are you experiencing the same issue even without using the Quicken tool?
    • Have you checked if the display resolution settings of the Surface device and the external monitor is the same?
    • Have you tried checking for a graphics device driver update?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done to isolate the issue?
