Start button, key, search box, edge all stopped working

All of a sudden my start button, windows key, edge, and search box stopped working. I haven't installed any new softrware, and they were working fine until today. I've searched the discussion group but most of these fixes are way to technical for me. Anyone
have a suggestion that doesn't involve my hiring a programmer?

I suggest you try rebuilding the index and check if issue is resolved. To rebuild all the index, kindly follow the below given steps:

• Press Windows key, type Indexing and hit enter.
• Click on Advanced button.
• Click Rebuild under Troubleshooting section and click OK.
• Try searching and see if issue is fixed." WILL NOT WORK as when I type in that search bar all I get is an empty white box.

To turn off windows updates in windows 7 follow these steps:

Click the start button, in the search box type in 'windows updates', click on 'windows update'
in the search results list, in the left side of the windows update window click 'change settings'
then in the option bar select 'Never check for updates'.
