Windows 10: Windows Store Update App Number Incorrect

After a recent Windows Store app update, when opening the Store it always reports at least one app is available for download and update even when there are no app updates available. When there are apps available, the number of available updates is always one more than the actual number available.

This occurs on my desktop, Surface Pro 4, and my Windows Phone (Lumia 950XL). Is anyone seeing this mismatch?

There is a known issue with the extras+info app showing incorrect status. Check if you can update it via the store (settings < swipe left to apps > store > check for updates).

 

No- nothing to update (scheduled updates complete). As you can see from my specs (below) I'm using the Anniversary build.
Store is 11706.1001.26.0

You might try

- but you see this on several machines. Could it be related to one particular app you've installed on all?

Could it be related to syncing between devices?

 

Good suggestions, but I already tried the Store troubleshooting process on the desktop and SP4. It is not available on mobile.
I do not synch between devices.
Even if there were an issue with a specific app (which I don't think is the case) it is the Store that reporting that one app has an update available but then does not show it the available download list.

Thanks Bo, but the process you describe in the other thread didn't solve the problem.

 

PJLLB, what got rid of the 1 next to the arrow in my case was getting this update from Windows update for something called "Store purchase App". The funny thing is that I cant find that App in Settings or anywhere. I searched Google, and no one seems to really know what it is. Supposedly is a deprecated feature or something that doesnt exist anymore. The only signs of it that I see in my computer is by running CCleaner, and I see it as being installed today by Microsoft. Funny and sad, what I will never use in my W10 (Store/Universal Apps) is my weakness in security.

Just adding to the conversation here as well & hopefully some of my details can help you all as well:

So, I too am having the same type of issue with my Windows store regarding an update being indicated.
I too, have tried resetting my Windows store, to no avail.
When I open my windows store, there is an 'update' indicator shown to the left of my account profile picture.
Here's what it looks like:

Clicking on the indicator will refresh the Windows store window with the "Downloads and Updates" where the Windows profile logged in shows what the Microsoft store has "synchronized" with the Microsoft account logged into the store. Typically, the apps needing an update show up at the top. Alternatively, if the "get updates" button is selected, a scan of the installed apps is performed and once again, you're given the chance to update if something shows up.





Just like the OP, no other apps show up to update!

So, before moving forward, time for gathering information:
My installed version of Windows:

A Windows update scan reveals that my computer is up to date:




Next, I investigated my "Windows Store" installed apps from an elevated PowerShell cmd like this:
This command lists the app packages (.appx) that are installed for every user account on the computer.
PS C:\> Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers



My first instincts (due to the type of work I do), is to check the event viewer.
Have any of you done that, and if so, were there any errors or warnings at the time you opened the windows store, or clicked on the "Get Updates" button in the Windows store?
Next, I took a look in the event viewer, specifically navigating to
Applications and Services Logs \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Store \ Operational
While the Operational log is selected, and to make life a bit easier, select the "filter current log.." link on the right. Select CRITICAL, WARNING, ERROR, then click OK
Are any of you seeing any errors there? If you do, please post your results.
These results may give us all a common denominator.

Something else you can do is to check are the logs that get generated when apps are installed.
You can export a copy of all of the logs associated with your apps from an elevated PowerShell cmd like this:
(Substitute your own directory and naming convention for your export)
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-AppxLog | ft -auto | fl | Out-File c:\scripts\Get-AppxLog_08-08-2017.txt

If you then open that text file you just generated with something like Notepad++ then perform a search for error, then you may get even more of a glimpse as to what might be wrong.

My experience for a few months last year working on domain joined Windows 10 Pro & Enterprise machines, along with blocking aspects of the Windows store through group policy have been challenging.
In addition, selectively needing to manually remove of some 'default' Windows 10 apps (that were never "wanted" or "needed" to begin with) have shown me that Microsoft doesn't make things easier anymore.

Now, this oddity is happening on my brand new computer (it's about 3 weeks old).
However, I have made some changes to this computer since first purchase, so perhaps some of my details might help some of your details so that we can find the common denominator.

-I did use the Windows store to purchase the Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro upgrade.
-I did notice after the initial successful 'upgrade' installation, and reboot, that there was apparently more windows updates that had not been applied, since a scan indicated so (not the windows store).
-After allowing the update, and restarting, my fully activated "Pro" was back to showing "Home"
-Went back into the Windows store, and once again, attempted to apply the upgrade to PRO, and it worked again, followed by a restart, and this time, it remained Pro.
-About a week later, I see these Windows store phantom update indicators.

Can any of you check your even viewers for errors as well?
In addition, I have not attempted to create or login with a new Windows profile.
This will prove whether this is a Windows profile issue, or if this is genuinely a Windows store issue.

As my previous post detailed, I too suffered from that phantom 'app update' indicator.

During my last troubleshooting steps (due to reading another thread here somewhere about the same issue), I started really thinking that this was somehow Windows profile related.
Apparently, my additional steps have shown now that it's not actually profile related for me - it was in fact, Windows store related, BUT also had to do with my profile.

Here's what I did to fix mine:

• Close your Windows Store
• Create a new Windows profile (this will be temporary, only to 'fix' this update cache issue).
• Make sure that you assign the same rights to the new profile (administrator).
• Log out of your original profile.
• Log into Windows 10 with your newly created 'test' profile.
• After the profile finishes completely, then open the Windows 10 Store.
• Login with the same Microsoft account (the account you were logged into the store with in your other profile).
• Perform a "Get Updates" and allow it to finish to completion.
• Close the Windows store, then reopen and perform another scan for updates.
• If nothing comes up and no phantom icon - close the store.
• Log out of the 'test' profile
• Log into Windows with your original profile.

Observe that you no longer have that "phantom" update available icon.

I've observed during my working on some domain joined machines, that for whatever reason, a particular part of the Windows profile is missing a value which is associated with the Windows store, or an app in the Windows store, or a cache setting. For whatever reason, this 'setting' never resets, and therefore, it continues to think that there is an update available. By running that Windows store with the same account but in a new profile, the store account appears to get that cached data cleared again & when the original profile opens the store again, it no longer sees an update.

I haven't figured out whether this was from a specific app, or the store itself, but nonetheless, this fix worked for me. Please do leave comments, as I'm always interested in seeing new crap from Microsoft's QA misses.

Glad this appears to have worked for you, but since this is impacting both Windows 10 Desktop and Windows 10 Mobile, the fix is not applicable to all.

 

Well, I'm not sure how the mobile version of Windows (for phones) treats the Windows store cache, but the desktop version of Windows 10 uses 2 components: The Windows profile logged into the machine being used, and the Microsoft Account being used to log into the Windows store.

Have you tried the details I've listed above on your desktop version of Windows? Please give it a shot and let this thread know what happens. There is absolutely NO connection between the mobile version of the Windows store and the desktop version of Windows store. Two completely different pieces of hardware, and the only connection is that account you're using to login with. So, I would assume that there is something else at play.

It's a wise idea to separate your issues, since obviously the desktop version of Windows 10 is very different than a mobile phone version. If I had the time, I would gladly load up a Windows mobile phone emulator, but unfortunately, since I don't have a Windows phone, I'm not motivated enough to dig on that.

Yes, I tried your process and it did not solve the issue. There are no Event Log entries indicating any Store errors -- just expected entries showing normal operations (e.g. app updates). I need to reiterate that this is happening on three devices running Windows desktop (two desktop PCs and a Surface Pro 4) in addition to the Windows 10 device (a Lumia 950XL). And this behavior began at virtually the same time for each of the devices, I believe when the Store or Store Purchase apps were updated.

And isn't the Store anohter Universal Windows Platform (UWP) universal app? The current mobile and desktop vesion number of the Store app is the same (version 11706.1001.26.0). So I can't agree with your assertion that "There is absolutely NO connection between the mobile version of the Windows store and the desktop version of Windows store." That would be inconsistent with how the UWP works per the description in What's a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app? - UWP app developer | Microsoft Docs

I have queried a Microsoft engineer who used to work for me prior to joining Microsoft, and will report what he says about the issue when I hear back.

 

This glitch continues to irritate me, will be very keen to find out what the MS engineer feeds back with
