Windows 10: Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Visual Studio Code Remote

Using VS Code Remote and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) gives you a fully featured Linux development environment on a Windows laptop or desktop. Let’s look at how you can get started using these tools to develop a python application in Linux like a true professional!

First things first: Installing what you need

You will need WSL and VS Code with the VS Code Remote – WSL extension installed to complete the content in this blog post. We’ll quickly go over what both of those are, and how to install them.

The Windows Subsystem for Linux

Commonly abbreviated down to WSL, this tool lets you run unmodified Linux binaries directly on Windows. This means you can use your favorite Linux tools, command line applications and workflows on your Windows machine without having to use a complicated set up like dual booting. Best of all, WSL is a tightly integrated solution between Windows and Linux. So, if you love Linux you can access all your Windows files and executables right from the bash shell, and if you love Windows you can easily access your Linux binaries and files from PowerShell or CMD.

Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code is a lightweight but powerful source code editor which runs on your desktop and is available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It comes with built-in support for JavaScript, TypeScript and Node.js and has a rich ecosystem of extensions for other languages (such as C++, C#, Java, Python, PHP, Go) and runtimes (such as .NET and Unity). Download and start your journey with VS Code.

You’ll also need the VS Code Remote – WSL extension, which allows you to use a container, remote machine, or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) as a full-featured development environment. To learn more and get started please visit the VS Code Remote documentation page.

Supporting JUnit 5 in Visual Studio Code

After supporting the widely adopted JUnit 4 with the Java Test Runner extension for Visual Studio Code, we’ve received suggestions to add additional test frameworks, like JUnit 5 and TestNG. We’ve added initial support for JUnit 5, including running, debugging test cases as well as test report. Please give us a try and let us know your feedback.

Expression Evaluation based Conditional Break Point

After introducing expression evaluation in our January release for the Java debugger extension, we are bringing the functionality to conditional break points. Now, you can set your breakpoint to break when an expression evaluates to true. We believe this could be a very useful feature when debugging your Java application using Visual Studio Code.

Other Updates

We’ve also added new features to our Java on Visual Studio Code extension lineup, including:

Java Test Runner

Trigger tests from test explorer on different levels

Add command to open log file

Add setting to specify the position of test report

Tomcat

Add several context commands in Tomcat Explorer

Add support for JVM customization and Tomcat server configuration

Add command palette entries for user input

Maven

Add support for auto-update maven project explorer when pom.xml is updated

Using Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in an Enterprise

Recently, customers in an enterprise environment have asked if there is a way to install WSL without an internet connection. These companies had some machines that would benefit from having WSL, but don't have an internet connection for security, logistics, or other reasons.

Enter: The Microsoft Store for Business

We (the WSL team) took a look into this issue and found that enterprises could use the Microsoft Store for Business to help deploy WSL distros to their company, including offline distribution! The Microsoft Store for Business is essentially another way to interact with the Microsoft Store, but from an enterprise administrator perspective. This includes tools like acquiring licenses for apps for your company, controlling which users can access which apps, and even providing a custom private company store which has a collection of apps that only your employees can view, and download.

To actually enable offline distribution, any distro owner needs to have elected to have 'offline licensing' available on their distro app. Luckily, many of our distro creators have already enabled offline licensing. At the time of writing this article this includes:

We realized that this information would be useful to all enterprise customers, so we added a new page to the WSL docs: 'Windows Subsystem for Linux for Enterprise'. This doc provides helpful resources on how to use the Microsoft Store for Business to deploy WSL to your company, as well as step by step instructions on how to acquire the offline installer for a distro of your choice.
