Windows 10: Windows update and Realtek High Definition audio

I am one of the many to have had problems with the Realtek High Definition audio drivers and Windows Update. I avoided the 1809 update but a previous, smaller one left me without audio. I patched it by reinstalling the old Realtek driver but that got the system so instable that I could not access my profiles and my laptop kept freezing down so often I had to reset Windows and cancel all the files on the hard disk.


Now I am in the same situation: the Realtek High Definition Audio is among the hidden devices and the system classifies it as "disconnected". The KB4468550 update (which should exist solely to solve the audio driver issue) does nothing at all in my case, and I am hesitant to use the old Reltek drivers again in case they send my laptop back to chaos.


Is there any reliable and tested solution to get the drivers for Realtek working? I would just wait for the October 2018 update, but there are no news about that either.

Realtek High Definition Audio not working

First of all, the Realtek High Definition Audio Device did not automatically reinstall after uninstalling and rebooting. I had to go into Add Legacy Software and select it to install. The Device Manager crashed while installing it, which it always does.
Upon starting it up again, the Device is there, but with a warning sign next to it indicating it is not functional.

Second of all, when I did the rest of the steps, the Driver Manager told me specifically that the drivers for Realtek High Definition Audio Device are up to date.

Realtek High Definition Audio

Download a newer version of the driver from the realtek website, install it and check if the sound comes back.

If not, uninstall the realtek Driver by:

• Open device manager
• Sound Video and Game controllers
• Right click realtek high definition audio device and select uninstall driver software
• Make sure the checkbox "Delete the device software for this device is checked"
