Windows 10: Windows Update deleted my Visual Studio files

I was copying my (rather large) visual studio files from one drive to a backup drive.

In the middle of the process (I fell asleep as it was late at night), Windows in their transcendent stupidity, downloaded some idiotic update and restarted the computer.

Previous to that, windows asked me when I want to install the updates. I said, 9AM. Well, the updates started at like 5PM. OK, yes to their stupid updates.

So I worked last night like 7 more hours on my program and then remembered, oh, back it up to my other USB drive. I started that process. Then when I woke up this morning I noticed that the backup was stalled at a file (db something or other, used by....god knows what but not important to my code) asking to try again, etc. I always say skip. Then Windows rebooted yet again for the "update". OK, coffee and news and now I got to that folder and my files are not there. The folder is empty.

A friend of mine is going to try to recover the deleted files.

What a nightmare. I worked maybe 20+ hours on the code and now, nothing.

Visual Studio Roadmap Updates and Visual Studio 2019 Information

Yesterday, we covered What’s next for Visual Studio for Mac, and today we’ve updated our Visual Studio Roadmap so you can see the latest news about what we’re working on. We’re particularly excited to share this update since it includes information about the first preview of Visual Studio 2019, which we will make available by the end of this calendar year. We plan to have a generally available (GA) version of Visual Studio 2019 in the first half of 2019.

Be sure to check out the full roadmap for all the updates, but some notable improvements are:

A better performing and more reliable debugger, moving to an out-of-process 64-bit process.

Improved search accuracy for menus, commands, options, and installable components.

Visual Studio tooling for Windows Forms and WPF development on .NET Core 3.

Supporting JUnit 5 in Visual Studio Code

After supporting the widely adopted JUnit 4 with the Java Test Runner extension for Visual Studio Code, we’ve received suggestions to add additional test frameworks, like JUnit 5 and TestNG. We’ve added initial support for JUnit 5, including running, debugging test cases as well as test report. Please give us a try and let us know your feedback.

Expression Evaluation based Conditional Break Point

After introducing expression evaluation in our January release for the Java debugger extension, we are bringing the functionality to conditional break points. Now, you can set your breakpoint to break when an expression evaluates to true. We believe this could be a very useful feature when debugging your Java application using Visual Studio Code.

Other Updates

We’ve also added new features to our Java on Visual Studio Code extension lineup, including:

Java Test Runner

Trigger tests from test explorer on different levels

Add command to open log file

Add setting to specify the position of test report

Tomcat

Add several context commands in Tomcat Explorer

Add support for JVM customization and Tomcat server configuration

Add command palette entries for user input

Maven

Add support for auto-update maven project explorer when pom.xml is updated

Visual Studio Modeling SDK is now available with Visual Studio 2017

You might want to use the Visual Studio Modeling SDK if you have one of these requirements:

Create Graphical or Form-Based modeling designers. For these, you can use the DSL Tools

Enable transformation of T4 templates part of the build. For these you can use the T4 SDK

Bulk-index assemblies in the Code Index underlying Code Map. For this you can use the Code Index SDK (embedded in the Modeling SDK)

The Modeling SDK changed its name several times during the last ten years: starting from the ‘DSL Tools’ in 2007, it grew to become ‘Visualization and Modeling SDK’ (VSVm SDK) in 2010. At that time, the SDK also contained UML extensibility. Finally, the name was a bit long and therefore it was shorted to ‘Modeling SDK’ in 2012. With previous versions of Visual Studio, regardless of its name, we used to release the Modeling SDK as a separate download.

We are pleased to announce that, from this Visual Studio 2017 RC update, the Visual Studio Modeling SDK will be released as part of Visual Studio itself (in all editions of Visual Studio).

How to install the components of the Modeling SDK?

Previously, the DSL Tools, T4 SDK and Code Index SDK were all shipped as part of the Modeling SDK.

In VS2017, the T4 SDK is installed with the T4 runtime as part of the Text Template Transformation optional component, which is itself installed by default with many Visual Studio workloads

The DSL Tools and Code Index SDK are installed as part of the DSL tools optional component (the component will be renamed to the Modeling SDK in a future Visual Studio RC update, as this is the name under which you have known it for several years). you can find this component in the Visual Studio Extension development workload in every edition of Visual Studio.

Known issues

For the next update of Visual Studio 2017 RC we are slightly improving the experience:

When you use the “Add New Project …” dialog, the DSL Tools project template is currently located under “Other Project Types | Extensibility”. And now, it’s the only one in this category. We are moving it to be under “C# | Extensibility” with the other Visual Studio SDK content, where it makes more sense.

The DSLProjectMigrationTool, (which transforms a DSL Tools solution created for previous versions of Visual Studio, to Visual Studio 2017) will also be added to the release.

DSL Tools are described in detail in the MSDN Library (Modeling SDK for Visual Studio – Domain-Specific Languages). One change is you won’t need to install the Modeling SDK any longer. The DSL Tools Lab is a good resource for beginners.

T4 MSBuild is also described in the MSDN Library (Code Generation in a Build Process - Visual Studio 2015). Again, you can skip the first step as you won’t need to install the Modeling SDK any longer.
