  1. Windows Update failing in a different way...

So I decided it was time to finally update my old Win 10 Pro (build 1703) media box to the latest version (1809) yesterday, since I was swapping out a couple of storage drives.

Rather than going through the pain of allowing it to automatically update, I decided to do a fresh install, so that I wouldn't be forced to find myself with a system that was full of bloatware, spyware and malware.
That is, I did my usual routine of grabbing the latest ISO from the MS website, and then stripped out everything I didn't want, using WinReducer, so I wouldn't have to face a system that had big brother mickeysoft snooping through all of my files, watching my activity, and bombarding me with suggested 'apps'. (What a misused abbreviation that is... App = applet. A PC runs applications/programs. A PC is not phone, and the main GUI is not the control panel!)
Nor would I be having to put up with them being force installed on me, all the while shoving adverts on to my screen. I wouldn't have to tolerate the stupid Cortana assistant, I wouldn't have to face the dubious pleasure of having a Bling Bing 'app' for everything taking up space, and I wouldn't have to deal with a browser that while new, is far from cutting 'Edge', because Edge is just one more thing that can be cut.

So with telemetry not being part of the OS, with the Store being history, with Cortana being interned in the digital graveyard, and all of the trashy 'apps' being consigned to silicon heaven along with Edge, I thought I was golden...

I ran the Windows installer with no network cable plugged in to prevent any meddling from Windows update during the process, and as soon as the first boot to desktop had completed, I immediately switched off the 'feature' that that downloads icons and drivers for the installed hardware.

I installed the 'bare' drivers that I KNOW are rock solid for the collection of hardware they are running on, and got all of my favourite programs up and running by instaling them after importing the AppData for each so they didn't even realise a full reinstall had taken place, I then assigned the machine its IP address, and plugged in the network cable, ready to have a nice little media player and media server with a slim build of the latest version of Windows, and what was the first thing that happened?

If you guessed that Winblows update downgrade went and grabbed the newest drivers, which it had been told not to, and promptly installed them along with all the bloated background junk that comes with them (thanks AMD and RealTek for passing all that along to MS... Yeah, much appreciated by some idiot, I'm sure...) then you would be right.
And because they don't appear as 'updates' the various bloat parts don't get uninstalled even if I roll the drivers back, and that ends up with a continual fight of it going through a loop of trying to grab the latest version again!
And just to add insult to injury, even though the bloat is there, there's no actual user interface for any it, and no unistallers either.

So I have a few exceedingly simple questions. (I thought it best to keep things simple, given that MS don't seem to handle complicated very well...)

Given how many graduates MS employ, why does it seem that the whole workforce is composed a bunch of complete and utter morons?!
What part of no is difficult for those window lickers to understand?

Why is it so difficult for them to respect the users wishes?

"Oh look, somebody has a stable system that works the way they want, but we think newer is better, even when it's clearly not..."

Then they sit in their cubicles, wondering why so many people want to completely block Windows update.

    :)

  3. AsRock Win User
    Windows Updates failed to instal

I'm not sure how differant XP media center Edition is but you could clear the history \ cache if these folders are there.

    Step 1 Register DLL files.

    =================

By trying this step, we can check if the update engines are working properly.

    1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.

    2. Click Start and Run, type "Regsvr32 atl.dll" (without quotes) in the Open box and click OK.

Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and atl.dll

    3. Similarly, one by one, register the files listed below:

    Regsvr32 msxml3.dll

    Regsvr32 wuapi.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

    Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll

    Regsvr32 wups2.dll

    Regsvr32 wucltui.dll

    Regsvr32 wups.dll

    Regsvr32 wuweb.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgr.dll

    Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll

    Regsvr32 jscript.dll

Note: If you encounter errors while registering any of these files then skip that file and continue with the next one.

If the issue persists, let's move on to the steps below to verify Windows Update services and temporary folders.

Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services.

    =========================================

    1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and click OK.

    2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".

    3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.

    4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.

    5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.

    6. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.

    7. Please repeat the above steps with the other services:

    Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    Event Log

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

Note: Event log service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles; this service does not have an option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

If it still does not help, let's proceed to step 3.

Step 3 Reload the Update temporary folders.

    ===================================

One possible cause is that the temporary folder for Windows Update is containing corrupted files. Let's erase all the files there to get the system clean.

    1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net stop WuAuServ

    2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

    3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.

    4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

    Net start WuAuServ

Please test the Windows Update website and let me know the result. If the issue persists, to clarify the issue and provide more accurate troubleshooting steps, please assist me in collecting the following information.

    Windows 10 fails to update

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
