Windows 10: Windows update has encrypted HD with Bitlocker which was not turned on.

Home PC is an Intel NUC815BEH with one Intel 660p 1TB SSD and 32GBCorsair Vengence RAM. It runs ran Window 10 Pro and is less than a year old.I had not come across Bitlocker.



On powering up recently it was installing updates, then suddenly told me Process1 initalisation failed and gave sixAdvanced repair options, none of which I can access-including system restore and a C: prompt. All options require a Recovery KeyIt gave the key ID for my particular SSD



Not having enabled Bitlocker, I have no Recovery Key.

There is supposed to be a copy was in my Microsoft a/c. Checkingby using another PC, it is not. Powering down then up just takes you in a loop, so I'm stuck with an encrypted disk.



A Dell user with a similar issue has reported that Data Recovery specialists advise his updatehad corrupted Bitlocker metadata. I suspect I am in the same boat.



I note the Intel visual BIOS, which I can still accesshas UEFI boot and Secure boot enabled but I have not made changes.I am concerned that Bitlocker will deny further access if I untick these.

Assistance requested:

1. Suggestions to get back in and save data - or is that a lost cause..

2. Failing that will a clean install from USB drive even work I have the original Win10 Pro key or will Bitlocker prevent this .

I suggest you to perform below mentioned steps to disable BitLocker.

To disable BitLocker I would suggest you try the following steps and see if it helps.

• 
  Press Windows key + X and click on
  Control Panel.
  
• 
  Change View by from Category
  to Large Icons/Small Icons.
  
• 
  Click on BitLocker Drive Encryption and click on
  Turn BitLocker Off.
  
• 
  Follow on screen instructions. Click on Decrypt the Drive
  when the message appears.

Need to turn off Bitlocker to install Windows 10

We suggest doing the following steps again to resolve the issue. To complete the procedure, make sure that you have the following information:

• You must be able to provide administrative credentials.
• The drive must be BitLocker-protected.

To suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption on an operating system drive, please follow the steps below:

• Click Start, click Control Panel, click
  System and Security, and then click BitLocker Drive Encryption.
• Click Suspend Protection for the operating system drive.
• A message is displayed, informing you that your data will not be protected while BitLocker is suspended and asking if you want to suspend BitLocker Drive Encryption.
  
• Click Yes to continue and suspend BitLocker on the drive.

Device encryption helps protect your data by encrypting ("scrambling") it. Only someone with the right encryption key (like a password) can decrypt ("unscramble") it.

• Sign in to Windows with an administrator account.
• Go to Start, enter encryption, and select
  Change device encryption settings from the list of results.
• Select Manage BitLocker, select Turn on BitLocker, and then follow the instructions.
