Windows 10: Windows Update is breaking my logon screen

Using an HP Pavilion dv7-6175us with Windows 10. I upgraded from 7 several months ago. Beginning in the last month, I started having an issue where once booted, the logon screen would break, flashing between lock screen and logon until an error window popped up, telling me that there was a breakpoint exception error and that Logonui.exe had crashed.

I had to create a bootable USB in order to access startup repair because asking it to do go into repairs on its own instead just led me back to the now broken logon.

I tried multiple system restore points without success until finally I had to restore back to about a month and a half ago. It would happen again when Windows Update ran in between subsequent startups. After restoring twice, things were fine for a long time. I want to say Windows Update ran without a problem until recently, but I can't quite remember exactly.

But last night, Windows decided to run an update during startup and bring the whole problem back again. I'm running another restore process right now but this is not okay. I want to access my computer. I also don't want to have to sit with the same build of 10 that will likely have problems in need of patching in the future that I won't be able to get if I have to disable automatic updates altogether, which I shouldn't have to.

I know I haven't provided ideal technical info. If this restore doesn't work, I can provide the error code exactly. I guess I'm just hoping someone has solved or even seen the same issue on similar hardware.

Latest update(s) caused intel graphics to go blank at login?

This happens to my 3147 as well. The 1511 upgrade definitely breaks the touch screen. Try tap/touch the screen after boot when the screen goes blank and see that brings you to the logon screen.

How to restore Windows 10 logon screen image to default?

Old title: Logon picture can't change

previously, I've changed my logon picture with Win10Logon BG Changer. Then I updated my windows. Then I resetted my WIndows 10. The logon screen can't change, it still the previous ( before reset). I've tried to change it with the previous app, but the app
doesn't work. Could I reset the logon screen to default?

Seems there is a corrupt or missing .dll in Windows. Did you happen to notice which update had caused this to keep happening ?
Ever consider a clean install of Windows 10 ? Do you have old OS disc or recovery discs ?

Try system file checker and DISM

(Admin) Command Prompt copy and paste this press enter, let it finish
sfc /scannow

Same open command prompt copy and paste this and press enter let it finish
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Reboot the Laptop, may need to run both of them a few times with a reboot afterwards

 

I actually started off with a clean installation of 10 after upgrading.
I can't tell which update it is because I can't get into OS.
I don't have any discs for 10 because I upgraded through Windows Update from 7.

The only way I can access any options is through my bootable USB. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I run a command prompt from the USB troubleshooting, will I be passing commands to the files of the USB, or my computer? For reference, the command prompt has me writing commands for x:\Sources>.

I also can't figure out how to get to safe mode, which is getting annoying. Is it possible to do so from the USB drive?

Edit: Both commands give me errors when run through the command prompt given by the USB troubleshooting. sfc /scannow goes through verification, then says, Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
The DISM command gives me:

so I'm guessing I will need to get to a prompt from the computer. Which means I need to get to safe mode, right? How can I do that, because it's not any of the options from USB repair.

 

So if you did a clean install of Windows 10, how did you do it without a Disc or Bootable USB of windows 10 ? Reset ?
If this was the case of having clean install then i would suggest doing it again from a disc or USB Flash rather then trying other ways of safe mode or command prompt as something was corrupted to begin with.

No, I put the image file on the USB. That's actually when I created the bootable drive originally.

Well, I tried to get into safe mode. I cut the startup short three times as per Microsoft's instruction, then tried Safe Mode with Networking, but Windows is still holding on to an update it wants to push. Even if I try any of the safe mode options, it first shows a screen saying (something like) 'Getting ready to install updates,' and takes me right back to the broken logon.

To top it off, system restore is failing as well. It gives me an unspecified error, 0x8000ffff.

So you're right, it's probably something corrupted long ago. I finally got around recently to reinstalling all the programs I had lost since the last system restore, is a clean reinstall my only option now?

Because that really aggravates me. I have a lot of files I can't replace. Could there be any way to keep them? I just feel like I've been screwed over for no reason and I'm powerless to fix it.

 

If you can get back into windows you can try a reset without loosing files. Pretty much feel this does not have a UEFI BIOS to be able to boot to advanced options from a Disc or USB with Windows 10 it, because of the age of this system.
Always of backed up important files from the beginning before you ever did this upgrade, keep them on an external device in situations like this or any other, example hardware failure
