Windows 10: Windows Update keeps disabling itself, error 0x80070422, error 1058

I have searched the Internet exhaustively but none of suggested solutions worked for me.


I am running Windows 10 home, version 2004, OS build 19041.630


"Windows update" in settings says: "Error encountered", and the Windows Update service is disabled. If I enable it manually in services.msc, shortly after it becomes disabled again. And if I go to the "log-on" service tab, there is no specific profile under the local system account.


I have run already the WA troubleshooter, but it couldn't find the problem


I also tried modifying the "start" key in the registry for several services, but it didn't work


I tried different other solutions, such as running DISM, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth but when it comes to enabling WUAUSERV I get the error "1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it". I tried going through the DISM log, but there are several "failures" and I'm not able to pinpoint the root cause. At some point I also got the 0x80070422 error, If I'm not mistaken in relation to dcomlaunch.

I have no blocker or other fancy software installed. I am the administrator, and I am running all the different tools and command prompts as "administrator". Windows update has always worked so far.


Additionally, the Windows Update History has also disappeared - totally blank


And of course I have also rebooted the system several times.


I am running out of ideas. Happy to repeat all the steps if somebody wants to guide me. I can also of course provide the DISM log, if useful

I am having the same issue with win 10. I have done all these steps and am still getting error code0x80070422) when I check for updates and using the store.

When I tried to run net start wuauserv I get error 1058 as well.

Any help not mentioned above would be appreciated.

A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.
