Windows 10: Windows Update Message - Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1909

Hello, I am currently running Windows 10, version 1809, OS build 17763.973.

As well as the last 4 or 5 monthly Tuesday updates, I have also been shown a message:


Feature Update to Windows 10, version 1909

The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements. When you are ready for the update, select "Download and Install now".


When I try to download, I get "Error encountered"

"We could not complete the installation because an update service was shutting down"


The exception to this was last night, when the download started, and the installation got to 86%, before, once again, getting the "Error encountered" message.


Two things: should I be able to upgrade from 1809 to 1909, and is this the way that 1909 will be rolled out to 'Home' users?


Do I have to go via Windows 10 1903 to get to 1909? If so, why am I being offered 1909, as detailed above?

Windows 10 Update

Well just noticed a pretty large one pop up coming in at 914MB, seems it makes some pretty serous updates.

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
