Windows 10: Windows Update Nightmare: error code 0x80070005

I have a PC with a too-small SSD drive: after a fresh Windows 10 install there is only 5.95GB free space, even after disk compression and no programs. I have an additional SDX card with more space so have moved Documents and Downloads there.

To solve the problem of Windows Updates being too large for the free space on the SSD I have moved the location of the Windows Updates folder to the additional drive. eg seehere for the process I used.


But even after a completely fresh install and these small changes I am still getting this error when I force system updates: "There were problems installing updates, but we'll try again later" with the 0x80070005 error code.

This is driving me crazy, after spending hours reinstalling Windows, backing up, running troubleshooters etc. My question is: what are my options? I know I should never have wasted money buying a cheap computer, but it's a bit late for all that...
