Windows 10: Windows Update still locks up or slows down my laptop

Every time my Windows 10 laptop freezes up or slows down to a crawl, rendering it unusable, 100% of the time I find it is Windows Update trying to do something in the background. 100% of the time, if and when I can regain control of the computer, if I click Check for Updates, sure enough there are updates waiting for virus databases and/or some other component of Windows.


This has been a problem since the XP days. It's 2019 folks! Why can't Microsoft fix the problem of Update taking over the computer and freezing it up or slowing it to a crawl??? At the very least, Windows could pop up a message warning us that it wants to update and give us a chance to save our work, rather than just crashing our machine.

Do windows updates slow down the computer?

slow down? not since I swapped to ssds. Now on my laptop if the fan is going nuts while it appears to be doing nothing, I can rest assured its just windows updates making my normally 5-10db laptop sound like a Harrier.
